Zenit Saint Petersburg, also known as Lions, is a Russian Football Club. They participate in the Russian Premier League, Russian Cup and Russian Premier League Cup.
The Club has also appeared in major European competitions like the UEFA Europa League, UFA Super Cup, UEFA Intertoto Cup and UEFA Champions League.
HISTORY
The club was founded 95 years ago in 1925 by merging with a club that already existed in Saints Petersburg.
In 1944, the club won its first title as the Soviet Cup which was the first competition that took place after WWII. Apart from Football, the club was known for its relationships with the Soviet Communist Party.
During the 80s, the club finished third in the League and three years later finished fourth. In 1984, the Club won their first championship just before the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
The 90s started horribly for the club as they finished at the 16th position in the 1992 Championship. The club, by the end, made a good come back by winning their first title (Russian Cup) after 15 years in 1999.
The beginning of the 20th century was fruitful as the club hired famous coaches like Dick Advocaat, Luciano Spalletti, Andre Villas-Boas and Mircea Lucescu. In 2006, the team reached the UEFA Cup quarterfinals and next year, clinched their 2nd Championship after 22 years.
By the end of the 20th century, the club won the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Super Cup.
Club Ownership
The Club is under the ownership of Gazprom a public Joint-stock Russian Company. Gazprom took over and invested heavily allowing the support staff to hire the high- profile players as well as coaches.
The Gazprom Arena serves as the home ground of the club Located in Krestovsky Island, Saints Petersburg. The stadium has a net capacity to hold 56,196 spectators.
The current net worth of the club is 212.60 Million Euros.
