The inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League 2023 is just 2 days away from getting underway as Gujarat Giants take on Mumbai Indians Women for the opening game at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai. All the teams filled in their slots during the WPL Auction last month and in 2 days time, it will be time to implement all the strategies.
WPL is somewhat the revamped version of IPL Women’s T20 Challenge which started in 2018 with just 2 teams. Women’s cricket in India has come a long way since then and the WPL is expected to help Indian players technically and also improve the quality of Women’s cricket.
India’s apex governing body of cricket – BCCI yesterday released tickets for WPL 2023 online. The tournament is kept free for women to increase the influx of Female supporters inside the stadium. And for Men, WPL tickets are available for 100 INR to 400 INR.
Meanwhile, North-Indian franchise Delhi Capitals Women gathered at Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai for their first team photo. The JSW-GMR backed franchise also announced their Captain for the inaugural edition through an Instagram post.

They chose a very unique of announcing 5-time World cup winning captain with Australia Meg Lanning as the Women in charge of the team. Just for a reminder, Delhi Capitals which was previously Delhi Daredevils haven’t won a single Men’s IPL title despite multiple Semi-final appearances.

With Meg Lanning as the captain, DC have a very well experienced and accustomed player who knows how to win trophies and most importantly how to handle the team. She will be deputized by Indian top-order Batter Jemimah Rodrigues who is DC’s most expensive buy in the auctions.
