World Cup 1979 Timeline Match by Match Results
World Cup 1979: After the grand success of the inaugural cricket world cup 1975, the ICC kept on going with its organization of the second edition in the year 1979 in England only. The tournament was once again played in the round robin format with two teams from each group qualifying into the semi-final stages. On the other side, every match has been scheduled for 60 over and all eyes were on the defending champions West Indies who were set to repeat their dominance on the cricket world.

1st match: India vs. West Indies (June 9, 1979)
The first match has been held between the defending champion West Indies and the Indian team at the Birmingham stadium. West Indies secured an easy victory by defeating the Indian team by 9 wickets and started their world cup campaign on a winning note.
2nd match: New Zealand vs Sri Lanka (June 9, 1979)
The second match was played between the teams of Sri Lanka and New Zealand and the Kiwis registered an easy victory by 9 wickets at the Nottingham ground against a minnow side.
3rd match: England vs Australia ( June 9, 1979)
The third match of the tournament was played between the host England and last year’s runners up to Australia at the Lord’s ground. Unexpectedly, England crashed the Aussies by 6 wickets and took revenge of their last world cup semi-finals defeat.
4th match: Canada vs Pakistan (June 9, 1979)
The fourth match of the day was held between the minnows Canada and Pakistan at the Leeds ground. As expected, Pakistan overcame the weakened Canadian side by 8 wickets and registered their first victory of the tournament.
5th match: Sri Lanka vs West Indies (June 13-15, 1979)
After a gap of 4 days, the third match of the tournament has been played between the Sri Lankan team and the defending champions West Indies. The match got abandoned without a ball bowled even after been extended for 3 days.
6th match: Indian vs New Zealand ( June 13, 1979)
India was looking to get something positive out of their first clash with the Kiwis but they didn’t succeed in the same whilst succumbing to defeat by 8 wickets in the process. The match took place at Leeds and kiwi team simply dominated the Indian men in almost every department.
7th match: Australia vs Pakistan (June 13-14,1979)
The seventh match between Pakistan and Australia turned out to be the first upset of the tournament as the Pakistani team registered an easy victory whilst defeating the Aussies quite convincingly with 89 runs. The match has been held at the Nottingham ground.
8th match: England vs Canada ( June 13-14,1979)
The next match was between the debutant Canada and host England and just like everyone expected, the English team emerged out as winners by 8 wickets at the Manchester stadium. After winning this one, England almost ensured their place at the semi-finals.
9th match: India vs Srilanka ( June 16-18,1979)
The world cup 1979 was proving as a big nightmare for the Indian team as they were getting along with a series of defeats. Even this time around, they were beaten by a lower tier side Sri Lanka by 47 runs at the Manchester stadium.
10th match: New Zealand vs West Indies ( June 16, 1979)
The Kiwis were on a role by this time around until they crashed into a champion team like West Indies in the 8th match of the tournament. The Caribbean team won the match by 32 runs at the Nottingham ground and also strengthened their hopes of entering into the semis.
11th match: Australia vs Canada ((June 16, 1979)
The Aussie team was up against the debutant Canadian team who were yet to register their first victory in the world cup. Australia didn’t find it hard to beat the minnows as they went on to win the match easily by 7 wickets at the Birmingham ground.
12th match: England vs Pakistan (June 16, 1979)
England faced the Pakistani team in the last league match of the tournament and this was almost a dead rubber as both the teams have already entered the semi-finals. England emerged victorious after thumping Pakistan in a close encounter with 14 runs at the Leeds stadium.
1st semifinal: England vs New Zealand (June 20, 1979)
Two last year’s semifinalists were against each other and this time around, England made sure that they don’t repeat last year’s mistake. Although New Zealand took the match down to the wire, the host finally won it by a close margin of 9 runs.
2nd semifinal: Pakistan vs West Indies (June 20, 1979)
Pakistan was playing their first semifinals against the defending champions West Indies and although they thought of making upset, west indies easily came victorious after beating them down with a margin of 43 runs at the famous Oval ground.
The Final: England vs West Indies (June 20, 1979)
World Cup 1979: England was pretty hopeful to win a world cup at their own backyard but West Indies just proved too good for the hosts by defeating them easily by 92 runs at the Mecca of Cricket, Lords. With this win, they also became the first team to win consecutive world cups.
