World Athletics Championships postponed to July 2022

The World Athletics Championships that was slated to take place in Oregon has now been rescheduled to from July 15-24 in 2022. The governing body took this decision this decision keeping in mind that the event does not clash with the Tokyo Olympics. Apparently, all the sporting events including the Tokyo 2020 Olympics getting postponed due to coronavirus.

The World Athletics Championships was initially slated to take place from August 6-15 next year and that clearly clashes with the Tokyo Olympics and also the Paralympics which were also postponed by a year from the original schedule of July-August window.

However, it was also decided that the new dates for the World Athletics Championships would be drafted, avoiding its clash with the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England and the European Athletics Championships in Munich.

The World Athletics authorities that the athletes would get to participate in all the three sporting events if they qualify. There won’t be any no such clashes in the fixtures. 

“The new schedule will prevent a direct conflict between any of these major events and, with careful programming, will ensure athletes can compete in up to three world-class competitions,” said World Athletics in a statement.

World Athletics president Sebastian Coe said that it would be delightful for the sports fans to witness all the three athletics events in consecutive succession in a single summer. 

“They will be treated to six weeks of absolutely first-class athletics. We would not have chosen to have three major championships back-to-back but it will give us a unique opportunity to promote our sport and its stars around the globe over a six-week period.” Coe said. 

The last edition of the World Championships was held in Doha in 2019 while the 2023 edition will take place in Budapest.
