Gujarat Giants of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), which will have its maiden season in March-April this year, have appointed former India cricket captain Mithali Raj as their mentor and advisor. After a career spanning 23 years and all formats of cricket, Mithali, the player with the most runs in women’s international cricket, announced her retirement last year. The 40-year-old player will serve as the team’s mentor and work to improve women’s cricket in Gujarat at all levels of the community.

Adani Sportsline recently spent Rs. 1289 crore on the Ahmedabad franchise, making it the most expensive of the five teams during the auction.

The new BCCI initiative, according to Mithali, will support the steady growth of women’s cricket and inspire young players to pursue careers in the sport.

According to Mithali “the Women’s Premier League’s debut season is a tremendous development for women’s cricket and the engagement of the Adani Group is a major boost for the sport as well.

“Women’s cricket is constantly expanding, so this kind of encouragement will surely persuade young women to think about playing the sport professionally.

“I think that corporate involvement with a high degree of influence will speed India’s eventual rise to greater glory. This degree of power can improve possibilities for female athletes and strengthen the sporting ecosystem, she continued.

Director of Adani Enterprises Pranav Adani referred to Mithali Raj as a role model and expressed the hope that her presence will help draw new talent to also other sports with cricket.
