By tapping into the vast American sports market, cricket stands to gain significant financial benefits if it gains popularity. Earlier this year, the inaugural edition of Major League Cricket took place in the US, with MI New York, the sister franchise of Mumbai Indians, emerging as champions. The MLC also saw participation from Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings team owners, who acquired the franchises Los Angeles Knight Riders and Texas Super Kings respectively.
Moreover, the hosting rights for the T20 World Cup in 2024 have been granted to the West Indies and the USA by the ICC. The US Masters T10 League is expected to contribute to raising awareness of cricket regulations within the United States in anticipation of this major event.
Given the contemporary decrease in individual attention spans due to technological advancements, longer formats of cricket like the five-day Test matches struggle to retain viewers. Even the viewership of ODIs has been declining. While T20 matches attract larger audiences, they still consume about three hours. In contrast, T10 matches are wrapped up within 90 minutes, akin to a football match. The T10 format’s emphasis on explosive hitting, strategic bowling, and exceptional fielding promises to captivate fans in a shorter span, potentially drawing more American enthusiasts to cricket.
The US Masters T10 League 2023 is set to host a roster of retired cricket legends from various countries, including India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, South Africa, West Indies, New Zealand, Ireland, England, and Australia. Renowned figures like Suresh Raina (California Knights), Yusuf Pathan and Gautam Gambhir (New Jersey Triton), Sreesanth (Atlanta Riders), Harbhajan Singh (Morrisville Unity), and Munaf Patel (New York Warriors) are among those participating.
The league also boasts a star-studded lineup including Shahid Afridi, Chris Gayle, Irfan Pathan, Albie Morkel, Jacques Kallis, David Hussey, Robin Uthappa, Dwayne Smith, Kevin O’Brien, Parthiv Patel, Corey Anderson, Liam Plunkett, Mohammad Hafeez, Ross Taylor, and Chamara Kapugedara. The involvement of such iconic names is expected to attract the attention of Indian and Pakistani expatriates residing in the United States. With this, the matches at Lauderhill’s Central Broward Stadium could potentially witness packed audiences, adding to the league’s overall appeal.
