Prithvi Shaw was the star performer for Indian cricket team in the first session of Day 1 of the second Test match against New Zealand in Christchurch. The opening batsman has made the most of the chance given to him but his innings in this game was cut short due to an outstanding catch by Tom Latham at second slip.

After completing his half-century, the Mumbai batsman went all guns blazing and in that attempt, he ended up gifting his wicket to Kyle Jamieson. Shaw tried to go for a big shot against an over-pitched delivery from Jamieson and Latham took a brilliant one-handed catch from thin air to remove him for 54.

The hosts sent back both of India’s openers in the first session to leave them on 85 for two at lunch. After a late start due to wet field because of overnight rain, New Zealand won the toss and elected to field first. Trent Boult trapped Mayank Agarwal lbw for seven with only 30 runs on the board but Shaw maintained the momentum for the next couple of overs.

The 20-year-old right-hander, who has often drawn comparisons with legend Sachin Tendulkar, scored his second half-century in Tests from only 61 balls, reaching the milestone with a six off Neil Wagner.

India are five wickets down on day 1 but the hosts are not ruling out their visitors in the game yet.

They are number one in the world for a reason and that is because they can adapt to any conditions. We are definitely expecting them to adapt pretty quickly and be positive coming into this Test match. Their records speak for themselves,” Boult had told reporters earlier.

After beating India in the first Test at Wellington, the Kiwis recorded their 100th Test win and they also became the first side to beat India in the World Test Championship.
