2-time IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders will enter the 2023 season with Nitish Rana as the captain of the franchise after Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of the tournament due to his recurring back injury. It could prove to be a major blow for KKR as Iyer is an important player for them and has a good record in the IPL circuit.

Eyebrows were raised when Shreyas Iyer did not come to bat during the 4th BGT test at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium. The match remained draw but KKR suffered a major blow. The West bengal based franchise took to Twitter to announce Nitish Rana’s appointment as the Captain in Shreyas Iyer’s absence.

Their decision has definitely made some heads shake as KKR had players who were more experienced and have played and won several T20 leagues around the globe. The likes of Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Tim Southee, Shakib Al-Hasan and Liton Das were the “supposed” candidates but KKR have bowled all of out.

“Kolkata Knight Riders today announced that Nitish Rana would captain the side in the absence of Shreyas lyer, who is recovering from a back injury. While we are hopeful that Shreyas will recover and participate at some stage in the IPL 2023 edition, we feel fortunate that Nitish, with the captaincy experience having led his state side in white ball cricket and the IPL experience he has had with KK since 2018, will do a great job.” 

In terms of seniority, Sunil Narine was the best candidate as he has won 2 IPL trophies in 2012 and 2014. Andre Russell was also a proven candidate being perhaps one of the strongest links in Kolkata Knight Riders. They will play their opening fixture of season 16 against Punjab Kings on April 2nd.
