Police in El Salvador reported that 12 persons were murdered in a stampede that occurred at a stadium where football enthusiasts had congregated to catch a local competition. Authorities stated that early reports suggested that thousands of spectators attempted to get into Cuscatlan Stadium in San Salvador, the capital of the Central American nation, to see a match involving the clubs Alianza and FAS.

Emergency services removed spectators from the stadium as ambulance sirens screamed and numerous police officers and troops were there to watch the game.

According to Health Minister Francisco Alabi, the nation’s hospital system is “providing medical care to all patients. First responders from the civil protection service were on the site, according to interior minister Juan Carlos Bidegain.

Comandos de Salvamento’s Carlos Fuentes, spokesman, reported that they were attending to more than 500 patients. According to Fuentes, some 100 people were transported to the hospital in serious condition, some of whom had injuries like suffocation and other sorts of trauma.

According to him, the stampede probably began when a stadium gate collapsed, causing people to swarm close together. According to police, at least two of the injured were in critical condition.
