Chess has developed tremendously in India and the biggest reason behind the rise of this popular indoor sport is the involvement of stakeholders who have worked hard behind the scenes to make this entity extremely popular and the equal credit should be given to All India Chess Federation(AICF) for laying out infrastructure based on that this popular game operates.

1.Exceptional Indian Chess Players: Indian chess has witnessed a significant rise in Grandmasters over the past few years. Players such as D Gukesh , Arjun Ergasi and R Praggnanadhaa , have climbed the ranks, contributing to India’s impressive standing as the 2nd-ranked team in the world.

2. India’s Credible Success at the Global Stage: The remarkable performances of Indian chess players at the international level have bolstered the popularity of the sport in the country. Their achievements on the global stage have garnered attention and admiration.

3.  Establishment of More Chess Academies :The opening of prominent chess academies, including the West Bridge Anand Chess Academy, has played a pivotal role in shaping and nurturing chess talents in India. These academies provide a platform for aspiring players to hone their skills under the guidance of seasoned professionals.

4. Increasing Media Awareness and Fan Engagement: The growth of digital chess media platforms, such as Chessbase India and Chess24.com, has greatly contributed to the rise of chess’s popularity. Major tournaments like the Chess Tour and Olympiad have received extensive coverage, attracting a vast viewership and engaging fans across the country.

5. Role of the All India Chess Federation (AICF): The AICF, affiliated with the Federation des International Chess (FIDE) since its formation in 1951, has played a vital role in promoting chess in India. In recent years, the federation has organized tournaments at the school and national levels, advocated for chess inclusion in school curricula in select cities, and actively identified and nurtured young talents.

By actively nurturing exceptional players, achieving success on the global stage, establishing renowned chess academies, increasing media coverage, and the efforts of the All India Chess Federation, chess in India has experienced tremendous growth in popularity.
