Sunitha Rao Biography: Sunitha Rao is an American-Indian & former professional tennis player.
She was the fourth female tennis player in history to represent India at the biggest stage. One of the successful female athletes in India, Sunitha represented Indian at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
EARLY LIFE:
Sunitha was born on 27th October 1985, in Jersey City, New Jersey of the United States. Her parents Manohar Rao and Savithri Rao are originally from Mangalore, Karnataka. But after their marriage, they shifted to the United States.
Sunitha spent her childhood in America but at the same time, she was always grounded in her culture. She also speaks Kannada as her immigrant parents hail from India.
PERSONAL LIFE:
Sunitha is a former tennis player now turned an Entrepreneur. After her retirement, she studied Finance at Babson College before becoming a full-time entrepreneur. She has worked as a Corporate finance desk jockey. She started her own venture with a company named Griffix Property Group. A full-time entrepreneur now, Sunitha completed her schooling from Villanova University. She has done her graduation from ACT – American College of Thessaloniki. She lives in Indianapolis, Indiana currently.

Sunitha started her professional life at the age of just 14 years. Her father and mother made savings from their earning before they got her enrolled in a tennis academy. Her professional career spanned for nine years before she announced retirement.
In 2005 she expressed her desire to represent India at the Olympics and her dream came true when she got qualified for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
She partnered with Sania Mirza, representing India in the women’s doubles event at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. But failed to make a mark, exiting the tournament after round one.
- She played her first WTA match at 2002 Brasil Open in the Women’s Singles event and won the first round.
- In 2003 she was approached by All India Tennis Association to represent India at the International Events but her family demanded 5 Crores so the offer was taken back by the AITA.
- In 2003 she played in Wimbledon where she excelled till round 3 before making exit after her loss.
- She participated in the Australian Open in 2003 where she could qualify till round 3 before losing out.
- She played at the Hansol Korea Open 2004 where she was beaten by Miho Saeki in the first round.
- In 2005 she participated at the Internationaux de Strasbourg but was defeated by Iveta Benešová in the first round.
- She participated in the French Open in 2005 but was ousted in Round 2 after facing loss. it was followed by her Australian Open appearance in the same year.
- In 2007 she made her appearance in the US Open where she finished her outing in round 3 of the tournament.
- Rao received an entry into the PTT Pattaya Open via a Lucky Loser spot.
- At the 2008 DFS Classic in Birmingham, she defeated Petra Kvitová before losing to Alona Bondarenko in the third round.
- In 2008 she represented India at the Beijing Olympics along with Sania Mirza but lost to Svetlana Kuznetsova and Dinara Safina of Russia in round two.
