Having turned 34 recently, Smith has expressed interest in playing in the United States, indicating that finishing his career in the USA would be a remarkable experience. Smith’s affiliation with NSW makes the partnership with Freedom particularly meaningful to him.

In a promotional video, Smith expressed his excitement about taking cricket to the United States and being part of this new cricketing journey.

Australia’s Future Tours Programme commitments do not clash with MLC’s July window in 2024, making it feasible for Smith to participate in the league while continuing to represent Australia as a centrally contracted all-format international player. Smith’s involvement with Freedom will undoubtedly elevate the team’s profile, as he is regarded as one of the world’s premier cricketers.

Klinger, the head coach of Freedom, expressed his enthusiasm for Smith’s ambassadorial role and its potential long-term nature. He also mentioned the possibility of attracting other high-profile players from the NSW system to join Freedom in future seasons.

Players such as Moises Henriques, Ben Dwarshuis, Josh Philippe, and Tanveer Sangha are set to feature for Freedom in MLC’s inaugural season, with Klinger hoping to recruit additional notable players for the following year.

Klinger highlighted the appeal of MLC to Australian players, as the league’s schedule aligns well with their commitments, especially after major tournaments. With the likes of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Sean Abbott potentially joining the ranks of Freedom, the team’s prospects for the upcoming season look promising.

As Freedom prepares for their first MLC fixture against the Seattle Orcas in Dallas, the addition of Steven Smith as a brand ambassador has generated significant excitement among fans and players alike. Smith’s association with the team and the league is expected to enhance the popularity and growth of cricket in the United States.
