Shakib Al Hasan set to lead Bangladesh in ICC CWC 2023 and Asia Cup 2023

Shakib Al Hasan

On Friday (August 11), BCB President Nazmul Hasan announced that Shakib Al Hasan will take on the role of Bangladesh’s ODI captain for both the Asia Cup and the World Cup. This position became vacant when Tamim Iqbal made the decision to step down from his captaincy on August 3.

Earlier reports from Cricbuzz had indicated that Shakib Al Hasan was likely to assume the captaincy across all formats, at least until the World Cup. This was despite competition from Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan for the ODI leadership position.

“We have appointed Shakib as the captain for Asia Cup and World Cup. The World Cup and Asia Cup squad will be announced tomorrow. The selectors will pick a squad of 17 members.” – BCB Chief said.

The BCB president had previously stated that the board was awaiting confirmation of Shakib’s availability before finalizing his appointment as captain. Shakib, who is 36 years old and currently holds the Test and T20I captaincy, will now take over the ODI captaincy immediately in preparation for the upcoming global tournaments.

Nazmul Hasan also affirmed that Litton Das will continue as the vice-captain and will lead the team in Shakib’s absence. Nonetheless, decisions regarding long-term leadership are temporarily postponed.

Shakib Al Hasan, who previously led Bangladesh in 50-over cricket, including the 2011 World Cup, will now lead the team once again in this format. Nazmul Hasan clarified that the squad’s announcement was delayed by the selection panel due to uncertainties surrounding the captaincy.
