Sergio Aguero explains why he didn’t leave Manchester City

Argentina striker Sergio Aguero has revealed that his desire to keep on scoring goals has motivated him to resist seeking a move away from Manchester City.

Aguero scored his 175th, 176th and 177th Premier League goals for the Citizens on Sunday against Aston Villa to become the leading overseas goalscorer in Premier League’s rich history. His hat-trick also moved him onto 12 in the competition, one more than the previous record-holder Alan Shearer.

The 31-year-old Argentine is City’s all-time top scorer and he now moves level with Frank Lampard as the Premier League’s fourth-highest goalscorer of all time.

At City, Aguero has won everything there is to win domestically with the Champions League the only trophy to elude him at the Etihad Stadium.

With that in mind, Aguero was asked after his record-breaking afternoon at Aston Villa why he has stayed at City so long in order to reach the number of goals he has at the Etihad.

“Normally, I don’t think how many years to be here at one club,” Aguero told Sky Sports, naming his iconic title-winning goal against QPR in 2012 as a reason to remain in Manchester.

He continued: “But when I came here, the club treated me very good and then my teammates, and that moment with Mancini. I adapt very very well, so I keep going.”

“After this, I want to keep going and keep scoring more goals, but the most important for me is that the team keeps winning and winning,” he said. “I don’t know what will happen from now until the end of the season, but it’s a moment to enjoy.

“I’m very happy to be breaking records. It’s always nice to receive awards. I want to thank my teammates for helping me to score them in all these years. Also, I’m aware it’s not easy to score 12 hat-tricks in the Premier League, as it is such a difficult competition. I’m very proud and very happy about it.

“Of course [I became a better player under Pep]. He helped me a lot. I’m very happy to play under his command because he helps me all the time in the training sessions. We all know how good is Pep Guardiola tactically, with this style of play we create a lot of chances so I’m focused on scoring them.”

When being quipped on Champions League, a trophy that Aguero and City are desperate to win, the Argentine striker revealed that European success is a huge motivation for him remaining time at the club.

“I want to keep scoring so I’ll keep focussed every day, I will be happy if we do very good in the Champions League,” he said.
