Ranji Trophy Round 4 Day 1

It was a great first day of 4th round matches played at different regions across the country. Most of the matches were washed out due to rain, while some of them started late. 

Rahane and Prithvi Shaw failed to contribute for Mumbai. Mandeep Singh contributed 81 runs for Punjab on a controversial day. Apart from that, it was a day dominated by the bowlers which created so much pressure.

Group A

1. Punjab versus Delhi (ICA Bindra Stadium, Mohali)

It was an interesting day of play between Punjab and Delhi at PCA Stadium, Mohali. Shubman Gill was involved in a controversy. Punjab captain Mandeep Singh played a captain knock scoring 81 while Gurkeerat Singh made 65. At the end of day 1, Punjab ended on 266 for 8.

2. Hyderabad versus Kerala (Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad)

After a long rain delay break, Kerala captain Sachin Baby won the toss and decided to bat first. It was an ideal start for the Hyderabad bowlers as Ravi Kiran, Mohammed Siraj and Ravi Kiran reduced Kerala to 32 for 4.

Vishnu Vinod and Sachin Baby steadied the innings for Kerala adding 38 runs for the 5th wicket. Siraj provided the breakthrough dismissing Vinod. Nazar came to the crease and counter attacked with aggressive stroke. Baby and Nazar added 54 runs for the 6th wicket. Hyderabad bowlers took the wickets of these two batsmen to leave Kerala in big trouble at 126 for 7 before bad light called off play.

3. Bengal versus Gujarat (Eden Gardens, Kolkata)

4. Rajasthan versus Andhra Pradesh (Sawai Man Singh Stadium, Jaipur)

Andhra Pradesh captain Hanuma Vihari won the toss and decided to field first played at Sawai Man Singh Stadium, Jaipur.  It was a superb bowling effort by AP bowlers who bowled a consistent line and lengths not allowing Rajasthan batsmen to score runs easily. Cheepurapallli Stephen and KV Sasikanth were the main wicket-takers to put Rajasthan under pressure at 88 for 7 at lunch. Ashok Menaria remained not out on 32.

It was a brilliant bowling effort by Andhra Pradesh bowlers as they bowled out Rajasthan for 151. In reply, Andhra Pradesh openers started on a brisk note adding 61 runs for opening wicket before Ruturaj Singh took 2 wickets in succession. At the end of day 1, Andhra Pradesh ended on 82 for 2.

Group B

1. Mumbai versus Karnataka (Bandra Kulra Complex, Mumbai)

The 1st day’s play between Mumbai and Karnataka ends with honours even. After electing to field first, Karnataka reduced the hosts to 60 for 6. Surya Kumar Yadav played a captain knock to help Mumbai post 194. In reply, Karnataka ended at 79 for 3.

Karnataka captain Karun Nair won the toss and decided to field first. Abhimanyu Mithun and Ronit More broke the backbone of Mumbai batting line by dismissing Aditya Tare, Ajiyanka Rahane, Prithvi and Siddesh Lad, reducing the hosts to 46 for 4. Mumbai Surya Kumar led the charge with aggressive stroke play putting pressure on Karnataka bowlers. Prateek Jain got rid of Sarfraz Khan and Shams Mulani to leave Mumbai in tatters at 60 for 6. At lunch, Mumbai were struggling at 86 for 6.

Surya Kumar Yadav played a captain knock with a quickfire 77. Mumbai were bowled out for 194 runs. In reply, Devdutt Paddikal and R Samarth got Karnataka to 68 for 0 before Shams Mulani got 2 wickets in successive balls.

2. Uttar Pradesh versus Tamil Nadu (Green Park Stadium, Kanpur)

Washed out due to rain.

3. Baroda versus Railways (Moti Bagh Stadium, Vadodra)

It was a wicket filled day between Baroda and Railways played at Reliance Stadium, Vadodra. Railways captain Karn Sharma won the toss and decided to field first. Railways bowlers kept it tight and dismissed Baroda for 201.

In reply, Baroda fought back well to leave Railways 24 for 2.

4. Madhya Pradesh versus Himachal Pradesh (HPCA Stadium, Dharamshala)

Madhya Pradesh captain Rajat Patidar won the toss and decided to field first at Dharamshala.  It was a superb bowling effort by Avesh Khan, Ishwar Pandey and Venkatesh Iyer to reduce Himachal Pradesh to 94 for 5 at lunch. PS Khanduri was the top scorer for Himachal Pradesh till with 31.

Avesh, Ishwar Pandey took 2 wickets each while Iyer picked the wicket of Khanduri. In reply, Madhya Pradesh openers added 49 runs for the opening wicket before HP bowlers made a strong comeback to reduce the visitors to 67 for 4.

Group C

1. Jharkhand versus Jammu and Kashmir (JSCA Stadium, Ranchi)

After a long rain delay break, Jharkhand captain Sourabh Tiwary won the toss and decided to bat first.  It was a decent batting effort by Jharkhand batsmen to end day 1 on 170 for 4.

2. Chhattisgarh versus Haryana (Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium, Raipur)

Match did not happen.

3. Services versus Maharashtra (Palam A Stadium, New Delhi)

Maharashtra captain Naushad Shaikh won the toss and decided to bat first. It was not an ideal decision as Services bowlers wreaked havoc to bowl out Maharashtra for 44. Chirag Khurana and Satyajeet Bacchhav were the only top scorers.

In reply, Services are in a strong position ending day 1 at 141 for 4. RS Paliwal and Ravi Chauhan helped the hosts dominate the day.

1. Bihar versus Mizoram ( Moin-ul-Haq Stadium, Patna)

Mizoram have dominated the 1st day’s play against Bihar. After Bihar captain Ashutosh Aman won the toss and decided to field, Pratik Desai and Taruwar Kohli made sure that Mizoram ends the day in a commanding position.

2. Goa versus Manipur (Goa Cricket Association Academy Ground, Porvorim)

Goa increased their domination over Manipur. Goa captain Amit Verma won the toss and decided to field first. It was a brilliant bowling effort as Prabhudesai took 6 for 14 to bowl out Manipur for just 106. In reply, Goa ends day 1 on 225 for 2.
