Paris St. Germain defeat Lyon to win Coupe de la Ligue final

Paris Saint Germain (PSG) won their ninth Coupe de la Ligue finals by defeating Lyon 6-5 in the penalty shootout at the Stade de France on Friday.

The match was entirely sealed under the deadlock with no goals being scored from any side until the full time. Even 30 extra minutes were allotted during the match but even that didn’t help break that stubborn deadlock. The match stretched to the penalty shootout to decide the fate of the French League Cup champion.

PSG was already considered as the potential winners in the match as they are already won the French Cup by defeating Saint Etienne 1-0 last week.

It was all dependent on Brazil’s striker Neymar to sail his side towards another title. And the striker didn’t disappoint by scoring one of the six goals during the penalty shootout.

No PSG player missed the shootout chance and put in heart and soul on winning the title. The penalty scores were levelled at 5-5 however, the final shootout from Bertrand Traore didn’t make into the goal and hence PSG still had a chance to grab the opportunity.

Pablo Sarabia banked on the opportunity as he led his side to win the seventh Coupe de la Ligue title in eight years. It was worth the final game with the last-minute thrill as PSG lifted the trophy, adding to their second accolade in the last ten days.

PSG will now face Atalanta in the second leg of the Champions League game on August 13.
