New Zealand legend retired just before T20 World Cup

New Zealand’s legendary opening batsman Colin Munro has announced his retirement just before the T20 World Cup 2024. Colin Munro has said goodbye to international cricket with immediate effect. He was out of the Kiwi team for four years and played his last international match against India in 2020.

Colin Munro has centuries in all three formats. Left-handed explosive batsman Colin Munro made his T20 International debut in the year 2012 and after that he also made his debut in ODI. Munro has played only one Test match in his entire career.

Overall, he played 123 matches for New Zealand and scored more than 3 thousand runs during this period. Munro was part of the New Zealand team in the 2014 and 2016 T20 World Cups and also played the 2019 ODI World Cup. He is the only batsman from New Zealand to score centuries in all three formats.

Colin Munro has been playing only in T20 leagues around the world for the last few years. He was not included in the New Zealand team for the T20 World Cup 2024 and after that he announced his retirement.

Munro has not been included in the Kiwi team for the 2024 T20 World Cup and that is why he has retired. The decision was taken after not getting a place in the T20 World Cup team. 

Colin Munro issued a statement

Colin Munro issued a statement informing about his retirement. He said that he is proud of being a New Zealand cricketer and was hoping to make a comeback. He said-

Playing for New Zealand was the biggest achievement of my career. Wearing that jersey was the proudest thing for me. I wore the Kiwi team jersey 123 times in all three formats, I will always be proud of it. Although it has been a long time since I played for the team, despite this I had not given up hope of returning.

Talking about not getting selected in T20 World cup and about his retirement, he said-

I felt that I could come back on the basis of my excellent performance in T20 leagues around the world. The New Zealand team for the T20 World Cup has been announced and that is why I officially end my chapter here.

Colin Munro career

Colin Munro has been seen playing in all three formats for the New Zealand cricket team. Munro made his debut in T20 cricket in 2012 against South Africa. Munro has played 65 matches for New Zealand in T20, in which he has 1724 runs and 4 wickets to his name. Talking about ODI cricket, he has played 57 matches in which he has 1257 runs and 7 wickets in his name. Munro played the only Test match in his career in the year 2013 in South Africa in which he also recorded 15 runs and 2 wickets in his name.
