New controversy in IPL: Delhi Capitals challenged the decision to ban Rishabh Pant
Delhi Capitals is involved in the race to qualify for the playoffs in IPL 2024 and every match is very important for them. Delhi team has to play a match against Royal Challengers Bangalore on May 12 but their captain Rishabh Pant will not be seen in it.
Pant has been banned for one match and fined Rs 30 lakh for violating the slow over rate rule for the third time in the current season and now he will not be able to play in the match against RCB. He along with the rest of the DC players (including the Impact substitute) have been fined Rs 12 lakh or 50% of their match fee, whichever is less.
This season Rishabh Pant’s Delhi Capitals have been quite lagging in terms of over rate and they have not completed the overs on time thrice so far. Even in the 56th match of IPL 2024 played on May 7, Delhi Capitals could not complete the overs in the stipulated time against Rajasthan Royals and since then speculations had started that Pant might be banned for one match. Now, this has also been confirmed in a release issued by IPL.
Major action taken against Rishabh Pant
Even before the match against Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals was stuck twice in the matter of slow over rate. DC was first found guilty in the case of slow over rate in IPL 2024 on March 31 against Chennai Super Kings and after that match, Rishabh Pant was fined Rs 12 lakh.
At the same time, in the match played against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 3, Pant’s team could not complete the overs in the stipulated time and due to this, a fine of Rs 24 lakh was imposed on them.
Apart from him, the remaining players of Delhi Capitals were also fined Rs 6 lakh or 25 percent of the match fee, whichever is less.

Delhi Capitals’ appeal against the ban was rejected
The release said that as per Article 8 of the IPL Code of Conduct, Delhi Capitals had filed an appeal challenging the decision of the match referee. Subsequently, the appeal was sent to the BCCI for review. The BCCI held a virtual hearing and confirmed that the match referee’s decision is final and binding. Pant will now have to stay out of the match.
Rule of slow over rate in IPL
In the Indian Premier League, when a team is not able to complete the overs in the stipulated time for the first time, then its captain is fined Rs 12 lakh. At the same time, if this mistake happens for the second time, then the captain is fined Rs 24 lakh and the players included in the playing XI (including impact players) are fined Rs 6 lakh or 25 percent of the match fee, whichever is less.
The captain is not banned if the mistake is made twice, but if a team commits a slow over rate for the third time, then a fine of Rs 30 lakh is imposed on the captain and he is also banned from one match. Apart from this, the remaining players of the playing XI (including impact players) also have to pay a fine of Rs 12 lakh or 50% of their match fee, whichever is less.
Delhi Capitals position in the points table
Delhi Capitals has played 12 matches so far in IPL 2024 and is at fifth position in the points table with 12 points with 6 wins. If the team wins its next two matches then its chances of going further will increase but Rishabh Pant’s exclusion will definitely be a big blow.
