Mouma Das Biography: Mouma Das is one of the leading tennis players from India. Hailing from Kolkata, Mouma Das has represented her homeland in major international events since 2000s.

She is also a two-time Commonwealth Games medallist who was also honoured with the Arjuna Award for her commendable contributions for the sport.

EARLY LIFE

Table Tennis happened to Mouma Das by chance. As a kid, the player was very naughty. Just to control her from doing disobedient things, Mouma’s parents put her to a club where she began playing table tennis.

In the club, Das received her first-hand Table Tennis experience & with time she began enjoying the sport as well.

She went on to participate in various regional tournaments. That was where it all started!

PERSONAL LIFE

 Mouma Das was born on 24 February 1984 in Narkeldanga in Kolkata, India.

Her father, Asit Kumar Das, has made a significant contribution to sharpening her skills in Table Tennis.

At her initial stage of career, Mouma was trained by Jayanta Pushilal. Apart from Jayanta, Mouma was also guided by Peter Engel of Germany who helped the TT player to sustain her success. In 2012, Mouma Das tied the knot with Kanchan Chakraborty.

PROFESSIONAL LIFE

The tennis player, Mouma Das, started playing TT professionally in 1993. In 1997, she made her international debut at the World Table Tennis Championship held in Manchester. In the competition, she reached the third round.

After 1997, she took a break following a major injury. Mouma earned her very first International gold at the Asia International Sports Games held in Yakutsk.

In 2015, Das earned a silver medal in the singles discipline at the Commonwealth Championships and also in the Team event. With these achievements, the TT player became a maximum Commonwealth medal holder from India.

In 2015, Mouma got qualified for the Rio Olympics 2016 at the Asian Qualification in Hong Kong. Unfortunately at the Olympics, Das lost (the women’s Individual event) to the higher seeded player Daniela Dodean from Romania in the 1st round.

It was always believed that the ITTF World Tours was never been easy for the Indian TT fraternity. But the heroic pair, Manika Batra & Das, rewrote the history by lifting the match by various notches & reaching the semi-finals for the very first time.

The Indian pair, Mouma & Manika secured a 12th world ranking in the ITTF rankings. Their rank was the best among the 28 Commonwealth countries that participated in the sport.

In 2017, Manika Batra and Mouma Das came second at the ITTF Challenge Spanish Open. They went down to the Korean pair of Haeun Yang and Jihee Jeon after an excellent woman doubles final.

They showcased a creditable performance which helped them to become the first Indian women’s duo to complete the competition with the silver at the ITTF Challenge series.

Later that year, Mouma participated in her 50th Final at the Annual Inter-State & Senior National Table Tennis Championship held in Ranchi. The TT player also earned a gold medal in the team event.

In 2018, Mouma was also a part of the TT Women’s team who earned a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. In the final round, the Indian team beaten Singapore with a total score of 3-1 which helped them to win a medal for their homeland.

Mouma also earned the Women’s Doubles event along with her partner Madhurika Patkar which gave India a lead in the tie.

Indian team enrouted to the gold medal in the event after defeating the English team in semi-finals.

CONTROVERSY

Apart from her achievements, awards, and performances, the table tennis player made headlines when her luggage including her kit and mementos was held up by the Customs officials in New Delhi airport.

The player’s bag had a power bank which is why she returned home without her bag. Although the bag was returned to her afterward.
