The T20 World Cup 2024 is about to start on June 2 and all the captains will be looking to win the title. But before the start of the World Cup, let’s check the most successful captain in the T20 World Cup, who has the most wins under their belt.
1. MS Dhoni (India)
Mahendra Singh Dhoni, fondly known as “Captain Cool,” led India to victory in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007. He captained India in a total of 33 T20 World Cup matches and won 20 out of them, boasting an impressive win percentage of 64.06%. His ability to identify match-winning moments and back his players, like promoting Yuvraj Singh in the 2007 final, made him a true leader.
2. Daren Sammy (West Indies)
Daren Sammy, the West Indian all-rounder, led his team to a historic comeback victory in the 2016 T20 World Cup after a winning first title in 2012. He led the Windies in 18 matches and won 11 games. With a win percentage of 67.64%, Sammy’s aggressive leadership style and his ability to get the best out of his players, particularly the powerful Windies batting lineup, were instrumental in their success.

3. Paul Collingwood (England)
Paul Collingwood, the gritty English batsman, might surprise some on this list. However, his leadership in the 2010 T20 World Cup, where England emerged as unlikely champions, deserves recognition. He led England in 17 games and won 8 out of them. With a win percentage of 50%, Collingwood’s startegic mind and ability to build a strong team spirit were key factors in their victory.
4. Kane Williamson (New Zealand)
Kane Williamson, the cool, calm and composed leader, has led New Zealand to consistent performances in the T20 World Cup. Kane led the Kiwis to 8 wins out of 17 games. With a win percentage of 70.58%, Williamson’s ability to read the game, rotate his bowlers effectively, and adapt to different situations makes him a highly respected leader. While New Zealand haven’t yet lifted the trophy under his captaincy, they have reached the finals in 2015 and 2021.
5. Graeme Smith (South Africa)
Graeme Smith, the legendary South African batsman, rounds out the top 5 list of the most successful captain in T20 World Cup history with a win percentage of 68.75%. Smith led Proteas in 16 matches and took them to victory in 11 games. While his captaincy tenure in the T20 World Cup didn’t yield a title, Smith’s leadership was crucial in building a strong South African T20 team. His aggressive tactics and focus on fielding excellence were hallmarks of his captaincy. However, South Africa’s struggle to close out close matches in big tournaments remained a hurdle.
Captains like Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka (Win %: 71.42%) and Babar Azam of Pakistan (Win %: 69.23%) deserve a mention for their impressive win percentages in the T20 World Cup history and strong leadership qualities. However, their sample size is slightly smaller compared to the top 5.
