Michael Holding picks his 4 best fast bowlers of all-time, no Indian in the list

Michael Holding

Former West Indian cricket, Michael Holding has named his four best fast bowlers that he has witnessed across different generations. While three in the list are the ones from the era of 90s, the one which drew a lot of attention is South African fast bowler Dale Steyn.

Putting more emphasize on picking Dale Steyn, Holding went on to say that he would even pay to watch the South African bowler bowl.

The other three of his picks include Malcolm Marshall, Andy Roberts and Denis Lillee.

“I have experience with those three guys (Marshall, Roberts and Lillee, but just watching, you can’t go Dale Steyn outside of photography. He has been one of the great fast bowlers in an era. You’d pay to see it,” said Holding.

Dale Steyn in his career has played 93 test matches and 125 ODIs besides 92 T20 internationals. He has picked 439, 196 and 64 wickets respectively.

He went on to praise Australian fast-bowler Dennis Lillee and Marshals and Robbers, calling them as the stalwarts of their era.

“Lillee had it all: rhythm, aggression control. He was extremely fast when he started, but he had to completely reshape his action after a back injury and find different ways to get hitters out after losing a lot of rhythm.

“When you see that someone can adapt in that way, you have to rate him highly, as many players are not as effective when they miss a beat,” said Holding, who was nicknamed ‘Whispering Death’ for his smooth and silent run-up.

Michael Holding has played 60 test matches in his career in which he has managed to pick 249 runs at an average of 23.7. He also represented West Indies in 102 ODIs, picking 142 wickets at an excellent average of 21.4.
