Marcos Rojo joins boyhood club Estudiantes on loan from Man United

Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo has joined Argentinean side Estudiantes on loan, the Superliga club confirmed on Thursday.

The 29-year-old defender had been looking for a way out of the Manchester-based club for quite some time now.marcus-rojo-man-utd

Last summer, it appeared he would switch his allegiance to Everton which would keep him in the Premier League, but the deal broke down and he had to make peace as a bit-part player for the Red Devils this season.

Rojo appeared just nine times for the Old Trafford based team in the 2019-20 season after having slipped down the pecking order under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

It was back in November that the Argentine last donned the Manchester United jersey, a clear sign that he needed to find new pastures to relaunch his career again.marcus-rojo-on-loan

His arrival at his boyhood club Estudiantes can be useful for the defender as he will now try to retrace his steps at a place where it all began for him as a teenager.

The Argentinean is aiming to get back into the Argentina squad ahead of the Copa America and knows that he needs more game time to better his chances for selection. It is believed that United will pay a part of his wages until he returns to Old Trafford in the summer, at the end of his loan.

The Argentine club Estudiantes announced that agreement had been reached with United on their Twitter page, saying: “You always return to the places where you were happy. Because of the sense of belonging, it’s stronger.

“Your dream and that of the Pincha family come true. We meet again. Welcome and thanks for coming back, Marcos. We welcome you with our hearts.”

Manchester United gaffer Solskjaer had suggested earlier that Rojo would not be allowed to leave Old Trafford in the winter transfer window as he remained under the clubs’ books till 2021.

Ahead of United’s Carabao Cup clash with rivals City, the former Norwegian player said, “I wouldn’t think so” when asked about Rojo’s departure.

“Marcos has been injured and has been working to get back and get fit again. At the moment it doesn’t look like it, no.”

Rojo previously made 43 appearances for Estudiantes between 2008 and 2011, before playing in Europe with Russian giants Spartak Moscow for the first time.
