Manu Bhaker has a lot of responsibility on her shoulders, as she is the biggest hope for all the Indians to win a medal in the sport of shooting. Bhaker is still young (22 years old), but she is the most senior player in this Indian contingent in terms of experience of playing at the Olympics.

Early Life

Manu Bhaker, who comes from Goria village in Haryana’s Jhajjar district, showed early athletic prowess in a variety of sports. Her father, Ram Kishan Bhaker, a chief engineer in the Merchant Navy, most likely influenced her athletic interests and supported her to take up sports as a career option.

Before turning to shooting, Bhaker excelled in a variety of sports, including Huyen Langlon, a Manipuri martial art, as well as boxing, tennis, and skating. Her amazing talent was evident early on, as she won medals at national events in a variety of sports.

This diverse background suggests the range of Bhaker’s athleticism, which has contributed to her versatility and success as a sports shooter later in her career.

Shooting Career

Manu Bhaker began her competitive shooting career with a ₹150,000 investment from her father. Her exceptional potential immediately emerged on the world stage, most notably winning a silver medal at the 2017 Asian Junior Championships. At the 2017 National Games in Kerala, she won nine gold medals, breaking records and defeating experienced shooters such as Heena Sidhu.

Bhaker’s career took off in 2018 when she won the gold medal at the ISSF World Cup in Guadalajara, Mexico, becoming the youngest Indian to do so at the age of 16. She continued her winning streak, capturing another gold medal in the mixed team event alongside Om Prakash Mitharval.

Bhaker’s success continued to the Commonwealth Games, when she not only qualified for the finals but also set a new record on her way to winning the gold medal. Despite nearly missing out on a medal at the 2018 Asian Games, her outstanding performance at the Youth Olympics secured India’s first gold medal in shooting.

Her momentum continued into 2019, with major victories at the ISSF World Cups, securing her spot at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Bhaker’s steadiness and combination with Saurabh Chaudhry established them as major contenders for Olympic victory, but it was just not meant to be.
