Mangal Singh Champia Biography: A maverick and a perfectionist in the sport of Archery, Mangal Singh has been one of the most successful archery players in the nation. Champia has represented India in the Men’s Team in various International competitions including Asian Games.

Mangal was also awarded Arjuna Award in 2009 for his exceptional contributions to the sport.

EARLY LIFE

Mangal Singh picked up a bow and arrow at a tender age of 8 or 9. His friends used to take potshots at kingfishers and wild doves.

Mr. Singh bought his very first bow for six rupees when he was 11 years old. He lied to his father saying that he bought a book with the money. Mangal began’s journey to became a professional archer started from there only. 

In 1992, Singh first heard of archery as an Olympic sport while listening to the radio during the Barcelona Summer Games.

Mangal was amused that a game played in his village is being played on an international stage and thus started dreaming to reach that stage one day.

PERSONAL LIFE

Mangal Singh Champia was born on 9th November 1983 in Ichakuti village, Jharkhand. The Ichakuti village was one of the poorest places in Jharkhand.

The village has no electricity. Children in this village used bows and arrows to shoot birds while the adults use them to kill lions, wildcats, & boars as well. 

At an early age, Mangal began to create a reputation as a brilliant archery player at local & state competitions.

Initially, he was hired to participate in some archery contests for Andhra Pradesh as Mangal spent his early twenties there only. 

At that point, the archer’s main income was his prize money. The first prize he received was $600.

Mangal has also spent many days in cramped compartments of trains en route to his tournaments. Without a fixed training program, Singh only practised when he felt like.

PROFESSIONAL LIFE

Mangal Singh Champia began archery in the year 1995 and became professional in 2008.

In 2008, Mangal completed the ranking rounding at the Summer Olympics with a score of 678 points. He was just behind Juan Rene Serrano & was almost equal to Viktor Ruban.

Singh scored more bull eye’s than Juan which helped him to be in the second seed for the final round.

Throughout his archery career, he has successfully achieved numerous titles & laurels for his country.

Apart from his awards, achievements, and performances, Indian archer Mangal Champia was dragged into a controversy by former Olympian & chief coach Limba Ram.

Mangal made headlines when Limba said that the AAI (Archery Association of India) done injustice to Champia who was excluded from the team for the Rio Olympics despite achieving an individual Olympic quota.
