Manchester United managed to hold the Premier League table toppers Liverpool to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford. It was a highly surprising result even though it was a home game for United.

The kind of Football United had played this season, especially in some of their recent games, Liverpool seemed to be too strong an opponent for them. But, the Red Devils showed great resilience on the pitch.

It was the first time in the Premier League 2019-20 that Liverpool dropped points. They had come into this game having won all the possible 24 points from their 8 games and it was expected they would extend their points’ tally to 27. But, it wasn’t to be.

Liverpool missed Mohamed Salah upfront who couldn’t get fit in time for this much anticipated fixture. United, on the contrary, got a boost ahead of the game as their talismanic goalkeeper David De Gea, who was earlier declared unfit, managed to recover miraculously fast and was picked in the starting XI.

United opened their account in the 36th minute of the game as Marcus Rashford converted a superb cross from Daniel James. However, there was a controversy in the lead up to that goal. A foul on Divock Origi was overlooked by the referee and the play continued which eventually resulted in a goal.

The VAR later showed the foul, but the referee still stood by his decision and United was given the goal.

The hosts kept Liverpool at bay for a long time after that. It looked like they might be on their way to a shocking win, but Adam Lallana netted the equalizer for Liverpool in the 85th minute, much to the delight of the visiting fans.

United would rue the opportunity of getting all three points from the game, but they would still be happier of the two sides. They, however, still remain in the bottom half of the points table at no. 13.
