Malaysia’s Ezat Idrus creates World record at ICC T20 World Cup 2024 Asia Regional Qualifier

The rise of Associate nations in International cricket might still be a long way but they haven’t failed to amaze. One such incidence took place during the ICC T20 World Cup Asia Regional Qualifier B for the 2024 edition. Malaysian seamer Syazrul Ezat Idrus made history as he ended up with a 7-wicket haul, registered for the first in Men’s T20 Cricket.

When the ICC T20 World Cup returns next year it will be a 20 team affair. The ICC announced in 2021 that starting from 2024, T20 Cricket’s most anticipated competition will have 4 more slots. USA and West Indies will co-host the event with the former country already giving their audience a Taste of Cricket with MLC, T20 World Cup 2024 could well be a revolution.

And if the presence of bowlers like Syazrul Ezat Idrus makes the the World Cup it will be a treat to watch. Most of his wickets during his record breaking 7-wicket haul against China, he bowled brilliant in-swingers and finished with figures of 7/8. China after scoring 12 runs, were outrageously all out for just 20 runs within 11.2 overs.

Malaysian batters on the back of Idrus’ brilliance, lost 2 early wickets but won the already won contest by 4.5 overs.

Syazrul Ezat Idrus breaks Peter Aho’s record

In 2021 Nigerian bowler Peter Aho had the best figures in T20 Cricket of 6/5 before Ezat Idrus hunted the Chinise at Kuala Lumpur. Only a hand full of bowlers have been able to pick more than 5 wickets among Full Member nations (Chahal, Kuldeep, Agar, Ajantha Mendis). But none of the big names ever picked 70% of the batters in T20 cricket.

It definitely is a morale booster as Malaysia are hosting the event and they couldn’t have asked for a better start. Winners of this competition will proceed to the Asia Regional Final in Nepal this November, where 2 Asian teams will book their tickets to USA and West Indies.
