Laxmirani Majhi is an Indian archer who represented India at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Hailing from a small village in Jharkhand, she helped her team win silver in the team’s recurve event at 2015 World Archery Championship, held in Denmark.

Coming from a lower-middle class family, Laxmirani Majhi has defied all odds to become of the greatest archers in the nation.

Indian female archer, Laxmirani was born in Bagua Village in East Singhbhum district, Jharkhand. He completed her education from a Government school.

The journey to become one of the renowned archery players in the country started from her school only. Laxmirani’s archery talent was noticed by archery academy selectors who offered her the first chance to take up the sport professionally.

Education has made who I am today – it was only because I went to school that I got a chance to be selected to train as an archer. Now I compete internationally and travel the world – school gave me this, I thank my parents for sending me to school.” Laxmirani said in an interview.

Laxmirani comes from the Santhal tribe. Daughter of a coal-mine worker, Majhi knew nothing of archery but had seen many from her village take that route to earn a living. She now has a job in the Indian Railways.

Laxmirani Majhi competed at the 2015 World Archery Championships. She finished fourth in the Individual event after losing out on the bronze, while she helped her team bag silver in the women’s team recurve event.

A talented athlete, Laxmirani has the ability to soak in pressure and consistently scores 10s to help her team out when needed.

She represented for the first time in Olympics at 2016 Rio Olympics. T he Indian women’s recurve team, consisting of Laxmirani , Bombayla Devi Laishram and Deepika Kumari, finished 7th in the ranking round. The team won their match against Colombia in the round of 16 before losing the quarterfinal match against Russia.

Laxmirani is currently supported and funded by the Olympic Gold Quest, a not-for-profit organization that aims to provide necessary help to the talented athletes.

She is from the Santhal tribe, and her father used to work as a coal-miner. She has come a long way from her improvised childhood and is making waves in the world on archery now. She decided to take up archery in order to help his had live a safe and comfortable life.

My father’s job was very dangerous. I did not want him to do that, so I thought I would take up archery and he can retire.” Laxmirani said in an interview.
