Early Life & Journey

Lauren Renee Down was born on 7 May 1995 in Auckland, New Zealand. She plays professional cricket for the New Zealand women’s team. She made her Women’s One Day International cricket (WODI) debut for New Zealand Women against the West Indies Women on 4 March 2018. In domestic cricket, Lauren Down represents the Auckland Hearts and the Takapuna District Cricket Club.

lauren down auckland heartsOn 26 September 2019 Lauren down alongside Rosemary made were offered their first-ever white ferns contract.  Auckland’s Lauren Down and Central District’s Rosemary Mair have picked up fulltime cricket contracts for the upcoming 2019/20 White Ferns’ season. Batswoman Down and pace bowler Mair will join an experienced core group of 17 players for the T20 World Cup in Australia.

Down scored an impressive century against the Australia Governor-General’s XI in early 2019. It was an innings which showcased the world that she has it in her and if she starts to deliver at the international stage, she can be a very big asset for her country.

Lauren Down made her one-day international debut for the New Zealand women’s cricket team on 4th March 2018 against West Indies. Lauren Down has played 11 one-day international matches for New Zealand women’s cricket team. In those 11 matches, she has had 10 opportunities to bat in which she has scored 75 runs with her highest score being 15 runs. She averages 7.5 with the bat and has a strike rate of less than 50.

The reason she was elected in the New Zealand Women’s Cricket team was her consistent performance for the Auckland Hearts team but she has not been able to convert her domestic performance into the international stage but still has time on its side and she will surely come back stronger. In those 10 innings, she has 6 fours and a six to her name.

Her T20 international debut came two years later on 9 February 2020 against South Africa. She has only played one T20 international for the New Zealand women’s cricket team in which she scored 6 runs. Her strike rate currently is 100 when it comes to T20 Internationals.

In January 2020, she was named in New Zealand’s Women’s Twenty20 International (WT20I) squad for their series against South Africa. Later the same month, she was named in New Zealand’s squad for the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia. They in group A which comprises Australia, Bangladesh, India, and Sri Lanka. It will be a tough task for the white herns and it will be interesting to see if Lauren gets an opportunity and if she does get an opportunity does she do justice with her performances.
