Julian Alvarez

Argentine professional footballer Julian Alvarez, who was born on January 31, 2000, competes for both Argentina’s national team and Manchester City in the Premier League. He is renowned for his forceful pushing, quick scoring, and teamwork.

Julian Alvarez started his professional career at River Plate in his home nation. He played a significant role in both the Manchester City club that won the continental triple in the 2022–23 season and the Argentina team that won the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Julian Alvarez was the first player to ever win a treble and a World Cup in the same season.

Career

River Plate

Julian Alvarez transferred from Atlético Calchn to River Plate in 2016, and he made a name for himself by competing with the club’s young squads in the Generation Adidas Cup. Álvarez trialed with Boca Juniors and Real Madrid before joining River, scoring twice in five games for the last team in a youth tournament. Due to the requirements of age, Julián Álvarez was unable to sign up for Real. During the 2018–19 season, Julián Álvarez was promoted to the River Plate senior team under manager Marcelo Gallardo. On 27 October 2018, he made his professional debut in a Primera División match against Aldosivi, replacing Rodrigo Mora with 26 minutes left in a 1–0 win.

A late appearance by Álvarez helped River overcome Boca Juniors in the second leg of the 2018 Copa Libertadores finals. On March 17, 2019, Álvarez scored his first goal as a senior, contributing to a 3-0 league victory over Independiente. He scored during the following December’s 2019 Copa Argentina Final between River and Central Córdoba, which River won 3-0 to win the championship. Álvarez scored five goals in six games during the Copa Libertadores group stage in 2020.

In an 8-1 victory over Alianza Lima in the Copa Libertadores on May 25, 2022, Álvarez scored six goals for River Plate.

Manchester City

On January 31, 2022, his 22nd birthday, it was announced that Alvarez had signed a five-and-a-half-year contract with Premier League champions Manchester City, but he would still spend the rest of the season on loan at River Plate. On July 30, when City fell 3-1 to rival Liverpool in the 2022 FA Community Shield, he scored on his professional debut. In a 2-0 away victory over West Ham United on 7 August, Alvarez made his Premier League debut after replacing Erling Haaland. On August 31, Alvarez scored his first two Premier League goals in a 6-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at the Etihad Stadium. On October 5 against Copenhagen, in a 5-0 victory, he made his Champions League debut.

Alvarez secured his club’s passage to the final on May 17, 2023, by scoring the final goal in a 4-0 victory over Real Madrid in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final. He scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Chelsea four days later to earn his first Premier League championship and the third straight for his team. He became one of the players to win the FIFA World Cup and Champions League in the same season, in addition to winning the latter and the Copa Libertadores, on June 10 with his team, despite only being a non-playing replacement.

International career

Alvarez was chosen by the 2018 FIFA World Cup Argentina U-20s to practice against the senior team. Alvarez was chosen for the 2019 South American U-20 (under 20) Championship in the month of December. He scored the second goal in a 5-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in a friendly match staged in Spain as a warm-up for the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup. Fernando Batista then called him up for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, which will take place in May 2019. He arrived in Poland with four wins and a goal against South Africa.

After selecting him for the 2020 CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic Tournament, which Argentina won with Alvarez scoring once (against Venezuela) in seven games, Batista then called Alvarez up for the Olympic Team in the following September.
