Journey of Manchester City to their first UEFA Champions League title
Manchester City added another prestigious trophy to their cabinet on Sunday as they won the UEFA Champions League 2022–23 title for the first time ever. This season was also the first time that they completed the treble by winning the Premier League, the FA Cup, and the Champions League.
This year’s journey was more dominant as compared to the previous season of the UCL, where they were knocked out by Real Madrid in the semi-finals. Well, in the 2022–23 season, the players and the manager of Manchester City ensured there were no hiccups and they achieved the dream. One of the city’s players, Julian Alvarez, became the first player to win the World Cup as well as the Champions League in the same season.
Manchester City started well by dominating their group in the league stage of the Champions League 2022–23. They played six games and won four out of those, drawing with Copenhagen and Dortmund each. They finished their league stage, Group G, with 14 points and the top position.
In the Round of 16, Manchester City faced RB Leipzig and made a mockery of them. In the first leg, City played out a draw with Leipzig with a scoreline of 1-1. In the second leg, they toyed with Leipzig and beat them 7-0 to showcase their dominance to the whole world.
City’s quarterfinal matches were against FC Bayern, which they won with an aggregate score of 4-1. Man City beat Bayern 3-0 in the first leg and more or less confirmed their berth in the semis. The second-leg match went on for a 1-1 draw.
Manchester City’s semi-final clash in the UCL 2022–23 season was a repeat of their last year’s clash against Real Madrid. The first leg proved to be a close affair with a 1-1 draw, but City once again asserted their dominance and thrashed Madrid 4-0 in the second leg, setting up the final clash with Inter Milan.
In the final, Manchester City beat Inter Milan 1-0 with the help of a goal from Rodri and achieved their dream of winning a UCL title.
