The on-air game has just started with the IPL media rights split into two parts: broadcast rights with Disney Star and internet rights with JioCinema. Although Disney Star India received the exclusive TV rights for the IPL from 2023 to 2027 for a total of Rs 23,575 crore, or Rs 57.5 crore for each game, Reliance-backed Viacom18 received the exclusive digital rights for a total of Rs 20,500 crore, or Rs 50 crore per game. Earlier, Star India paid Rs 16,347 crore for the rights to broadcast TV programmes and to stream them online for the years 2018 to 22. (Rs 54 crore per match). The current fee per match for televised and online media is Rs 107.5 crore.
Put all the monetary terms aside. This step of Jio Cinema will revolutionize the cash-rich league making it available for anyone with a data pack. The league will now welcome viewers from every corner of the world. Initially, netizens need to have a valid subscription for Hotstar to watch the IPL.
With Jio Cinema hosting the broadcasting of the 16th edition, users who are not customers of Reliance or have a Jio SIM can also avail themselves of matches as it is free for anyone and everyone. This step of Jio Cinema would make the already popular league more popular.
