Indian-born cricketer Jatinder Singh (born 5 March 1989) represents the Oman national cricket team. Jatinder Singh made his international debut for the national cricket team of Oman at the 2011 World Cricket League Division Three competition. Jatinder Singh is a top-order right-handed batsman.
Early Life
Jatinder Singh was born in Ludhiana, of the state of Punjab, India, on March 5, of the year 1989. Jatinder Singh belongs to the Sikh community’s Ramgarhia Carpenter Caste. His father Gurmail Singh moved to Oman in 1975 to work as a carpenter for the Royal Oman Police. With his mother Paramjeet Kaur and three siblings, Jatinder Singh relocated to Oman in 2003, enrolling in the Indian School, Muscat.
At the 2007 ACC Under-19 Elite Cup, Singh played in five games for the Omani under-19 team. At that competition, Jatinder Singh was Oman’s wicketkeeper, and oddly, all five of his dismissals were through stumping. Three of those stumpings happened against the Hong Kong under-19s in the same game.
Cricket Debut
At the age of 20, Jatinder played two matches in the WCL Division Three tournament before making his senior debut for Oman in January 2011. These two were directed towards Italy. He did not bat in Oman’s victory in the third-place playoff after being dismissed for a golden duck on his debut in the group stages, caught by Hayden Patrizi off Vince Pennazza.
Jatinder participated in two more games for Oman at the 2011 ACC Twenty20 Cup, where they placed third and earned a spot in the United Arab Emirates for the 2012 World Twenty20 Qualifier. Oman finished last in Group B in the World Twenty20 Qualifier after losing all seven of its group matches, although it overcame Denmark in the playoff for 15th place. Jatinder participated in just four games during the competition. Jatinder Singh made his debut for the team in the second game against Uganda but did not make another appearance until the last two games of the group stage against Namibia and Ireland and the playoff for 15th place.
In the remaining three games, Jatinder started the batting alongside Zeeshan Siddiqui, scoring two back-to-back half-centuries. Jatinder Singh scored 56 not out in Oman’s total of 116/6 against Ireland, the highest total in the game, and again scored 56 against Denmark, contributing to a 113-run opening stand with Zeeshan, who hit 67 off 36 balls. Jatinder finished the tournament with 136 runs at an average of 45.33, making him the team’s leading run-scorer and ranking sixth overall in batting averages despite playing in only half of the team’s games.
Playing Cricket Career
Jatinder has played frequently for Oman in ACC and ICC limited-overs competitions since the 2012 World Twenty20 Qualifier, including the 2012 and 2014 ACC Premier League, the 2013 and 2015 ACC Twenty20 Cups, and the 2013 and 2014 WCL Division Three and Division Four competitions. Jatinder Singh scored 90 runs off of 110 balls against Jersey in the fifth-place playoff of the latter competition, earning him the title of player of the game. Oman finished first at the 2015 ACC Twenty20 Cup, played in the UAE, to earn a spot in the 2015 World Twenty20 Qualifier.
After innings of 45 against Saudi Arabia (from 31 balls, including three sixes), 62 against Malaysia (from 41 balls, including four sixes), and 70 against Singapore (from 37 balls), Jatinder was named the “Best Batsman” at the competition.
In the fifth-place playoff of the 2015 World Twenty20 Qualifier, Oman’s Jatinder made his Twenty20 International debut against Afghanistan. In a three-match series against the United Arab Emirates in October 2016, Jatinder Singh made his List A debut for Oman.
Jatinder Singh was included in Oman’s squad for the 2018 ICC World Cricket League Division Two competition in January 2018. Jatinder Singh was included in Oman’s roster for the 2018 Asia Cup Qualifier competition in August 2018. He was included in Oman’s roster for the Division Three match in the 2018 ICC World Cricket League in October of that year. With 225 runs in five matches, Jatinder Singh was Oman’s top run-scorer in the competition. He was selected to play for Oman in the 2018 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup in December.
Jatinder Singh was selected to play for Oman in the 2019 ICC World Cricket League Division Two event in Namibia in March 2019. Oman earned One Day International (ODI) status by placing among the top four teams in the competition. On April 27, 2019, in the championship match against Namibia, Singh made his ODI debut for Oman.
Jatinder Singh was included in Oman’s roster for the 2019 ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier match in September 2019. With 267 runs in nine games, Jatinder Singh was Oman’s top run-scorer in the competition. Jatinder Singh was included in Oman’s roster for the 2019 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup in Bangladesh in November. Jatinder Singh was included in Oman’s team in September 2021 for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
