IPL 2023 : Axar Patel says he would have never accepted DC’s Captaincy! Find out why

All-rounder Axar Patel hands down has been the most consistent player for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2023. He has performed well with bat and the ball and his numbers this year tell us that a little bit of support from other players could have helped DC stay in contention for the Play-offs.

He has had an extra-ordinary season with the bat, in fact he is experiencing his most prolific edition ever. In all of DC’s 13 matches, Axar has managed to score 268 runs at a strike rate of 137.44 with a best of 54. In the previous editions, the highest he could score was 227 runs in the 2017 season while playing for Kings XI Punjab presently known as the Punjab Kings.

With the ball, Axar hasn’t been necessarily great but he has been good, picking 11 wickets with one of the best economy rate of 6.95. At one stage during the tournament, many asked DC management to sack David Warner from captaincy and appoint Axar Patel as the new Skipper of the team in place of being the Vice-captain.

But when the 29-year-old was asked about becoming Captain of the Delhi Capitals, he made it extremely clear that even if he was offered captaincy, Axar wouldn’t have accepted. “Mai chaalu series mey kisi ko kuch nahi bolta (I don’t say much during the mid-season). Agar mere pass captaincy aati bhi toh mai leta nahi (even if they had given me the captaincy, I would not have accepted it).” – Axar Patel said.

He also stated that if David Warner was removed from captaincy then Delhi’s misery would have only increased. Axar also emphasized on the fact that it is important to back the Captain and the set of players. “When your team is going through such a bad season, these kinds of things make it worse. You need to back your players, your captain, and if you will change captaincy in the middle of the season it doesn’t send a good message.”  – Axar concluded.
