ICC Cricket World Cup 2019: The Cricket World Cup of 2019, officially termed as ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, is the 12th edition in the tally of Cricket World Cups, which is scheduled to be hosted jointly by England and Wales, starting from 30th May to 14 July.
Hosting Rights of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019
The special hosting rights were conferred in April in the year 2006 after England and Wales together refrained from the official bidding done to host the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, which was later held in Australia and New Zealand. The first match scheduled will be played at The Oval followed by the final to be played at Lord’s. England and Wales are hosting the world cup for the fifth time. They had previously hosted 1975, 1979, 1983 and the 1999 World Cups.
Format of World Cup 2019
The format for the upcoming tournament will comprise of a single group of ten teams, with each team playing against the other nine teams, and the top four teams out of the lot finally progressing to the knockout stage of semi-finals followed by the final. This ten team tournament pattern has gained wide criticism due to the lack of other associate teams in the tournament.
As per the increase of the Test playing nations from 10 to 12, and with the admission of Ireland and Afghanistan to the list in June 2017, it’s going to be the first World Cup to be contested without the presence of all the Test playing nations and post-elimination of the Associate teams during the qualifying tournament, this will also turn out to be the first World Cup featuring no Associate members.
Qualification for Contesting
ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 will feature a total of 10 teams, which is a sharp decrease from previous World Cups held in 2011 and 2015 which featured a uniform tally of 14 teams which included all the test playing nations. The currency hosts, England, along with the other teams amongst the top 7 marked in the ICC One Day International rankings declared as of 30 September 2017 eventually earned the automatic qualification, and the remaining two spots are to be decided by the 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier.
During the announcement of the qualification structure, ICC Associate along with Affiliate members, who are guaranteed four spots in the previous two World Cup tournaments, are represented by mostly two teams, and possibly by none at all if they get beaten by the lowest ranked members in the Qualifier matches. It’s also implied that at least two teams out of the Ten Tests playing nations during the time of the announcement would require competing in the qualifying tournament, thereby gaining the possibility of missing out on the World Cup finals entirely.
In following to the success gained recently, Ireland and Afghanistan both were promoted into the ICC ODI Championship rankings and have also been promoted to full members of the ICC eventually, becoming two of the newest Test cricketing nations. But, they will still need to qualify for the World Cup through the current process.
Afghanistan has won the qualifying tournament, defeating none other than the West Indies in the final. Both teams eventually got qualified for the World Cup, while Zimbabwe despite hosting the qualifying tournament failed to reach the final and will be missing the World Cup for the first time since 1983.
Recently appointed Ireland will also be missing the World Cup for the first time since 2007 and therefore, for the first time ever no Associate nation will be participating in the World Cup of 2019
