The omission of wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson from India’s ICC ODI World Cup 2023 squad has sparked significant discussion and disappointment among cricket fans. Despite his impressive ODI career statistics, where he has played 13 matches and scored 390 runs with an average of 55.71, Sanju did not make the cut for the World Cup scheduled to commence on October 5.
In addition to his limited ODI appearances since his international debut in 2014, he has featured in just 24 T20Is, tallying 374 runs in 21 innings at an average of 19.68 and a strike rate of 133.57.
The talented Indian wicketkeeper-batsman, is known for his elegant and stylish batting expertise. With a graceful technique and an ability to time the ball exceptionally well, Samson has consistently been a prominent figure in India’s domestic and franchise cricket.
One of his notable strengths is his adaptability to various formats of the game. Whether it’s the slam-bang world of T20s or the more traditional style of ODIs, Sanju Samson has showcased his versatility as a batsman. His ability to find gaps, play both orthodox and unorthodox shots, and maintain composure under pressure situations makes him a valuable asset in the middle order.
Sanju was part of the Indian squad during the recent West Indies tour from July to August. Although he managed to score a half-century in his last ODI and a total of 60 runs in two matches, his performance in the T20I series was below par, with only 32 runs in three innings and a highest score of 13.
Regarding Sanju’s exclusion from the highly anticipated World Cup, former India spinner Harbhajan Singh remarked that the 28-year-old will need to wait for another opportunity.
“Sanju is talented but he will need to wait for his chance. He will have to wait for his time and turn. Ishan Kishan is set. He has cemented his place. KL too has cemented his place. KL is a class player. Sanju has to wait. Age is by his side.” – Harbhajan said.
He is a great student of the game and a talented cricketer. He has played a lot of IPL matches and captained Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. But he will have to wait some more time. I do feel for Sanju Samson.” – Harbhajan excluded.
