Flop XI of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019

World Cup 2019 was a blockbuster ride, wrapped-up by the perfect game as England clinched their first World Cup title after a Super Over tie on account of boundaries. This World Cup saw some outstanding performances but on the other side, big names disappointed with the bat and ball. Here, we pick an eleven of flop players of World Cup 2019.

  1. Martin Guptill

Matches: 10

Runs: 186 runs

Average: 20.66

Striker Rate: 84.16

Martin Guptill was the highest run scorer of CWC 2015 and he started 2019 World Cup with a quick-fire fifty, setting the right tone for the tournament, however, as the tournament progressed, his form went downhill. He struggled against pacers in the next few games and kept getting out early on, but the captain showed faith in him and didn’t make him a single game. Guptill though was a brilliant asset to New Zealand on-field. Guptill’s numbers look very dull, especially if you remove his one innings, where he scored a 50 that came in the first match of the tournament. Guptill didn’t even deliver in the final when team needed him most.

  1. Fakhar Zaman

Matches: 8

Runs: 186

Average: 23.25

Strike Rate: 81.93

Fakhar Zaman was the man who rose to prominence after his hundred in the final of the Champions Trophy 2017 against India, winning Pakistan the game. Team Management had great expectation from Fakhar, hoping him to carry the Champions Trophy form into the World Cup, however, his numbers remained low. As an opener, he was entrusted to give starts, but failed, putting pressure on the other, following batsmen. He showed some grit against India where he scored 62., but apart from that, he had a tournament to forget.

  1. Aiden Markram

Matches: 8

Runs: 140 runs

Average: 23.33

Striker Rate: 84.16

South Africa were looking for saviours, but Markaram failed to rise to the occasion. He batted at AB De Villiers’ position, but couldn’t justify himself.

  1. Glenn Maxwell

Matches: 10

Runs: 177 runs

Average: 22.12

Striker Rate: 150

Glenn Maxwell had a huge responsibility in the lower order for Australia, providing them the thrust in the final overs. His aggressive style of play didn’t work for Australia as he played some irresponsible shots and got out at the wrong time.

He was a valuble player for Australia in the 2015 edition, where his role was to add quick runs in the end overs, but he failed to live up to his billing in the 2019 edition. He failed to score even a single fifty in the tournament and let Australia down.

  1. Tom Latham

Matches: 8

Runs: 155 runs

Average: 19.38

Striker Rate: 71.36

Tom Latham had been a consistent player for New Zealand, scoring well in the last 1 year or so. He was an important player in middle overs, who could rotate the strike and get the odd boundary, however, Latham failed to find his rhythm this time around

  1. Sarfaraz Ahmed (WK)

Matches: 8

Runs: 143 runs

Average: 28.60

Striker Rate: 82.18

Sarfaraz Ahmed will be remembered more for yawning in the middle of the India match than his performances in this World Cup. He was the centre of a huge troll show over his conduct on field and also, his batting performances and captaincy.

He not just failed with the bat, scoring just the one half century in 8 games, but was also a failure as the captain, failing to motivate his side and being at the front of all the wring selections and decisions.

  1. Kuldeep Yadav

Matches: 7

Wickets: 6

Average: 56.16

Economy: 5.02

Kuldeep Yadav was among the players to watch-out for at the World Cup, but as it panned out, he ended the tournament as one of the players to forget. He failed to find his line and length and had just the one good spell against Pakistan, where he got rid of dangerous looking Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam. Overall, a tournament Kuldeep would want to get out of his head at the earliest.

  1. Mashrafe Mortaza (C)

Matches: 8

Wickets: 1

Average: 361

Economy: 6.44

Captain always shoulders the responsibility of the team and leads from the front, however, Bangladeshi captain Mashrafe Mortaza did just the opposite. Mortaza failed with the ball, managing to take just a solitary wicket and turned out to be a big flop. In a few games, he couldn’t even complete the full quota of 10 overs, something you would expect the least from one of the team’s lead bowlers.

  1. Rashid Khan

Matches: 9

Wickets: 6

Average: 69.33

Economy: 5.79

Rashid Khan is the number one spinner in the world and he showed us just why with his fine performances across the leagues in the World. He came on the back of a strong IPL season with the Sunrisers Hyderabad, but failed to deliver at the big stage- the World Cup. He even became the spinner with most runs conceded in an ODI game. In the second half of the tournament, he made batmen struggle in middle overs but couldn’t convert his dot balls into wickets as batsmen came out with a plan to see him out.

    10. Thisara Parera

Matches: 6

Runs: 34

Average: 5.66

Wickets: 1

Thisara Parera was one of the most experienced players of the Sri Lankan team and was hoped to deliver with both the bat and the ball. He was a huge disappointment for his team as his numbers with both, the bat and the ball were unworthy of note.

    11. Kagiso Rabada

Matches:  9

Wickets: 11

Average: 36.09

Economy: 5.09

Kagiso Rabada shined at the IPL but missed out in the later stages owing to an injury. He recovered just in time to turn up for South Africa at the World Cup, but it wasn’t an outing he would have expected.

Rabada, a bowler in the top 10 in ICC ODI rankings, failed to deliver as per his calibre, managing just 11 wickets in the entire tournament, which is way below his standards. South Africa had high hopes rested on him, but the youngster failed to shoulder the responsibility.
