Fawad Alam Departs from Pakistan Cricket Circuit to Pursue Career in the USA

Fawad Alam

Fawad Alam, a cricket batter who had fallen out of favour, has announced the conclusion of his cricketing journey representing Pakistan, spanning an extensive 15-year period. Alam, who will reach the age of 37 this October, is set to grace the field as a ‘local’ player for the Chicago Kingsmen in the Minor League Cricket T20.

Minor League Cricket tournament serves as a foundational element of the recently concluded flagship T20 tournament of the United States, known as Major League Cricket (MLC). Fawad Alam joins a cadre of Pakistani cricketers, including the likes of Sami Aslam, Hammad Azam, Saif Badar, and Mohammad Mohsin, who have relocated to the United States to pursue their cricketing careers on American soil.

While Alam inaugurated his involvement in Pakistan’s white ball format in 2007, his presence within the ranks of the Pakistan dressing room has been sporadic at best. Despite delivering a century on his Test debut in 2009, he encountered subsequent omissions from the Test squad. It took a hiatus of 11 years before he was granted another opportunity to play Test cricket, notwithstanding his consistent accumulation of runs with an average of 55 in domestic competitions.

In 2020, his cricketing trajectory received a rejuvenating twist, enabling him to solidify his position in the Test squad once again. He fortified his reemergence by securing a century against New Zealand under challenging circumstances in only his third match following his comeback. Subsequently, he bolstered this feat with additional centuries against South Africa, West Indies, and Zimbabwe.

Nevertheless, Alam’s distinct and unconventional playing technique was exposed when Pakistan faced Australia in early 2022. On tracks that were considered tame, he only managed to accumulate 33 runs across four innings, ultimately leading to his exclusion from the squad after a subpar performance in a Test match against Sri Lanka in July 2022.

While he was a pivotal member of Pakistan’s triumphant T20 World Cup squad in 2009, his contributions to the T20 format were limited, with a mere 11 appearances following the championship victory. Throughout his career, he participated in 19 Tests, 38 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 24 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) for Pakistan, achieving the distinction of securing five Test centuries, as well as a solitary ODI century during the 2014 Asia Cup against Sri Lanka.

Fawad Alam concludes his cricketing journey, having accumulated over 14,000 runs in the realm of domestic cricket through 201 first-class matches spanning 19 years of dedication and perseverance.
