English Premier League : Arsenal go 2 points clear at the top spot

Arsenal defeat Nottingham Forest by 5-0

Match day 14 of the English Premier League saw Arsenal regain the top spot and go 2 points clear off defending champions Manchester City. The Gunners are in resounding form this season as Mikel Arteta’s side have lost only match in the English top-flight this season.

The London outfit missed out a top-four finish last season by just 2 points and failed to make a UEFA Champions League appearance for the 6th season in a row. However, this season, the tables seem to turn around for them as they have recovered and revitalized themselves as a better side this term.

The arrival of Gabriel Jesus, Oleksander Zinchenko, Fabio Viera, Matt turner and Marquinhos have done wonders for the club. Moreover, players like Martin Odegaard, Granit Xhaka, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and many more players have rediscovered their form which has helped Arteta figure out a match winning core.

Arsenal met Nottingham Forest on match day 14 and smashed 5 goals past the bottom sided outfit. This was the Gunners’ 10th win this season and they are looking like serious contenders to win the Premier League this season.

Meanwhile, reigning champions Manchester City continued to close the gap on the league leaders as they defeated Leicester City by 1-0. Kevin De Bruyne scored his third goal of the season thanks the free-kick won by Jack Grealish. The Belgian scored an absolute blinder to help City win. The foxes would be happy to restrict the champions to score just a single goal and it was a similar result as last season’s meeting between the two sides.

Man City’s deadly number 9 Erling Haaland missed his first PL game of the season because of an injury he sustained while facing Borussia Dortmund in the UCL group stages. Manager Pep Guardiola shrugged off all the concerns over his injury and indicated that the Norwegian will be back in action this weekend against Fulham.

Their crosstown rivals Manchester United defeated West Ham United as Marcus Rashford’s 38 minute strike was enough to give Erik Ten Hag’s men their 3rd win in last 5 PL fixtures. Rashford’s goal against West Ham was his 100th in the Premier League as Manchester United are fifth in PL table with only a point away from top-four.

Brentford and Wolves shared a point each with a 1-1 draw and the fixture between Fulham and Everton remained goalless. Newcastle United defeated Aston Villa by 4-0 and they take the fourth spot. On the other hand, Chelsea traveled to Amex Stadium and it was not the type of reception that Graham Potter would have hope for as the Seagulls won by 4-0.

Elsewhere, Tottenham Hotspurs defeated AFC Bournemouth in a close contest by 3-2. The biggest upset of match day 14 was Liverpool losing at home to Leeds United by 2-1. Leeds broke Liverpool center-back Virgil Van Djik’s 70 game unbeaten streak at Anfield and the merseyside club are now at the 9th spot.
