Dominica has withdrawn from hosting any games of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2024, citing challenges in completing the necessary infrastructure work on practice and match grounds. The 2024 edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, set to be co-hosted by West Indies and the United States, is scheduled to kick off on June 4 and conclude on June 30. Dominica was initially selected as one of the seven Caribbean countries to host matches alongside Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Guyana, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Windsor Park, a prominent venue in Dominica, was shortlisted to host one group match and two Super 8 games. However, the government’s statement revealed that despite tangible efforts, including upgrading and enhancing practice and match venues, the set timelines submitted by contractors made it impossible to complete the necessary works within the stipulated timeframe.

The withdrawal decision was not taken lightly, considering Dominica’s sterling reputation in hosting international cricket. The government expressed gratitude to Cricket West Indies for their partnership over the years and extended best wishes to the organizers for a successful tournament in June 2024. The statement emphasized that the decision was made in the best interest of all parties involved.

CWI CEO Johnny Grave acknowledged Dominica’s decision and expressed understanding, emphasizing the board’s recognition of the government’s commitment to preparing for the T20 World Cup. Grave further stated that CWI looks forward to continued collaboration with the Government of Dominica and the Dominica Cricket Association for hosting international matches in the future.

While the complete match schedule is yet to be finalized, CWI and the International Cricket Council (ICC) are working diligently to confirm the details. An announcement is expected imminently, as mentioned in a press release by CWI. The cricket community awaits further information on how this change will impact the tournament’s logistics and schedule.

Dominica’s withdrawal from hosting ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 adds a twist to the tournament’s preparations. Despite challenges, the collaboration between CWI and the Government of Dominica remains strong, with hopes for future opportunities to host international matches. Cricket enthusiasts worldwide eagerly await the finalized schedule to plan their involvement in this highly anticipated event.
