Indian Shuttler Subhankar Dey who achieved a unique feat in his badminton carrier when he defeated legendary badminton player Lin Dan in the SaarLorLux Open Badminton Championship in 2018, shared that he used to sleep next to the poster of two times Olympic Gold Medalist which was made by his sister. He added that he used to copy Lin Dan’s style of playing and always dreamt about competing against his Idol someday in the International circuit.

“When I was small, my sister made a big poster for me of Lin Dan and I used to sleep next to it. I used to think that one day I will play against him” Subhankar said these words in a sports-based show known as “Building Bridge”.

“I never thought of defeating him at that time since I was very small. It was always a dream for me. I wanted to see Lin Dan, Play like him, and copy him when I was in Kolkata” he added.

He clarified that the reason he didn’t celebrate after registering a victory against his idol was purely because of the respect he had for his idol till date.

The 27-year-old Indian Shuttler started receiving national recognition after registering victory against B Sai Praneeth in the quarterfinals of the senior badminton national tournament which was conducted in Nagpur in 2017. As Shubhankar revisited the early days of his badminton carrier and mentioned that his brother and sister inspired him to take up this sport professionally and the moment he landed in Mumbai he had only 500 rupees in his pocket which he certainly termed as the turning point in his carrier.

He also added that his rejection at Hyderabad training academy opened the doors of Europe where he went to Germany to learn the nuances of Tennis to a great extent. When asked about his future plans he added that that he is currently going with the flow but working hard at the same time to break into Top 20 rankings next year.
