The Indian track athlete, Dharun Ayyasamy specialises in two events, ie, 400 metres and the 400 metres hurdles. Dharun has participated in the relay event (4*400 metres) at the Summer Olympics 2016.
Dharun Ayyasamy was born in a village named Ravuthampalayam, Tamil Nadu. The athlete was born on 31 December 1996. Dharun lost his father at just eight years of age.
Dharun Ayyasamy has studied at the Century Foundation School. His journey to become one of the most successful athletes started from his school only where he was coached by Mr Alagesan. He participated in various Kho-Kho events and also represented Tamil Nadu in the game before switching to athletics in class ten.
PERSONAL LIFE
Dharun lost his father due to tuberculosis. The young athlete’s mother is a school teacher and also has a sister, Sathya, who plays volleyball and has also represented Tamil Nadu in the sport. After his father’s demise, Dharun’s mother has taken care of the family single-handedly. Dharun has mentioned in many of his interviews that he dedicates all his achievements to his mother. As a son, Dharun never forgets to thank his mother for all her sacrifices.
PROFESSIONAL LIFE
Dharun Ayyasamy earned a gold medal at South Asian Games 2016 for 400 metres hurdles. He showcased a splendid performance in Guwahati by overtaking the fellow Indian, Jithin Paul, at the very last hurdle.
In 2016, Dharun participated with the relay team at Bangalore in the national 4*400 metres , followed which he sealed his qualified for the Olympics as well. Impressive performance by the team in the event helped them secure 13th position in the world rankings. After 1964 and 2000, it happened for the third time that the men’s relay team got qualified for the Olympics.
He toiled for long 6 months before participating in the Asian Games and the Czech Republic. And in 2018, Dharun Ayyasamy set a new record by winning the 400-metre hurdles and earning a silver medal at the Asian Games, Jakarta.
