Dewald Brevis: Living His Dream as a Vital Addition to the Proteas Squad

In the lead-up to what could mark his debut in international cricket, Dewald Brevis radiates enthusiasm and anticipation as he gears up to face Australia. Rising to prominence during the U19 World Cup, discussions had revolved around when Brevis would step into the senior men’s team. With the ODI World Cup in India looming, Brevis’s unexpected inclusion in the white-ball squads for the Australia series has come as a surprise and a delight.

Reflecting on his journey, Brevis shared, “It’s been really amazing these last few days. A dream has come true from a very young age. To be part of this amazing setup of the Proteas. It’s been my dream and it feels good to live my dream. Couldn’t have asked for anything better,” during an interaction with the press.

The Australia tour initiates with T20Is, all to be held at Kingsmead, Durban. For Brevis, launching his international career on home soil holds an inherent comfort, further accentuated by the sentimental significance of the venue. He elaborated, “I’m quite excited (about being at Kingsmead). It’ll be special because obviously, it’ll be in South Africa but the biggest thing is that we have pictures of when I was a boy and watching the game with South Africa playing. I was literally at the ground, taking pictures with all the players, even Quinny (de Kock) and all the players.”

Though not yet adorned in the national colors, Brevis boasts experience from numerous franchise T20 leagues globally, showcasing his adaptability in various batting roles. Whether opening or concluding an inning, he emphasized the need for versatility, especially in a fiercely competitive national team.

Brevis remarked, “My biggest thing is to be a person who can play all roles wherever I have to bat for the team. Always give my best… You play the situation basically… Wherever you bat, you keep doing your best and enjoy yourself.”

As comparisons between Brevis and South African legend AB de Villiers arise, the young talent remains grounded yet eager for his potential debut. He acknowledges the mounting expectations but approaches the challenge with optimism. “There is definitely (a lot of nerves) but everyone has been very welcoming in the dressing room… It’s about being strong, be in the moment and I always trust God’s timing… I prefer to go head-to-head with the pressure.”

With Australia-South Africa clashes known for their intensity, Brevis acknowledges the potential trial by fire. Familiarity with Australian players from T20 leagues, including the IPL, has softened international boundaries, offering an insight into camaraderie across nations.

Brevis exclaimed, “I’m quite excited because it’s going to be proper heat and I’m prepared for that… It’s going to be exciting because they are one of the top teams. It’s going to be great cricket and hard cricket… You learn to form a team with them also.”

As Brevis prepares to take his initial steps onto the international stage, his blend of excitement, adaptability, and enthusiasm underpins his determination to contribute valuably to the Proteas’ campaign, embodying the spirit of a dream fulfilled and a journey just begun.
