Cricket Australia To Provide Men’s Equivalent Prize Money to Women’s T20 Team  

Today is the real day for women’s financial empowerment after ICC (International Cricket Council) decided to increase the prize money by 320% for the upcoming 2020 T20 World Cup winners. Cricket Australia also decided to put extra share to match men’s tournaments equivalent prize money, if Australia women’s team win the finals.

Now let’s take a look at the total prize money Australia women team shall receive. After the ICC meeting, it is decided that the winner will receive the US $1 million, while the runner up will get the US $500,000.

Now, if Australia women team win the T20 World Cup finals, Cricket Australia will add the US $600,000 more in the prize money, which is equivalent to men’s tournament prize money.

We want to continue our commitment to equality by ensuring that any prize money earned by the Australian Women’s team in the T20 World Cup is the same as what is on offer in the men’s side of the tournament,” CA head Kevin Roberts said as quoted by CricketNext

While there is no doubt we are starting to see financial progress for our talented cricketers, we still have a way to go and CA will continue to play a role in driving equality for our athletes,” he added.

Australia (women) has won the T20 World Cups in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2018 respectively, they are strongest contender to win the World Cup this time around too. ICC has also increased the prize money from $2 million to $ 3.5 million for the 2021 World Cup held in New Zealand.

Women’s cricket has grown in viewership in the last 5 years and is almost on the same pedestal as men. Like men, Australia women team are also world beaters and share a strong liking for the World Cups. The prize money hike shall generate overall interests among mass to take up cricket as a profession.
