Brazilian Dictionary honors Pele by using his name for synonyms of Best, Unique and Incomparable!
Late Legendary Brazilian Footballer Pele after etching his name into the history books of World football as one of the most prolific goal scorers, will now find himself in a Brazilian dictionary. Pele’s impact and flair is why his name is being used even after his passing in 29 December 2022.
From now on in Brazil, the noun Pele will be in use as a synonym for Best, unique and incomparable. The Michaelis dictionary made the statement on Wednesday as the culmination of a campaign that amassed in excess of 125,000 signatures to recognize the late football legend’s influence outside of football.

11 days after the Argentina became World champions during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Pele lost a long a battle with Colon cancer at Sao Paulo’s Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital.

The Michaelis Dictionary added a page to convey the new change and it read – “The one that is extraordinary, or who because of his quality, value or superiority cannot be matched to anything or anyone, just like PelĂ©; nickname of Edson Arantes do Nascimento (1940-2022), considered the best athlete of all time; exceptional, incomparable, unique.
Examples: He is the Pelé of basketball, she is the Pelé of tennis, she is the Pelé of Brazilian theatre, he is the Pelé of medicine.”
Ever since this new broke out, Football fans around the world welcomed the Publication’s decision to honor and forever keep the former World cup winner in constant memory. The Pele Foundation and Santos FC expressed their happiness after the news.
“The expression that was already used to refer to the best at something is already eternal in the pages of the dictionary,” PelĂ©’s social media channels said after the announcement. We made history together and put the name of the King of Soccer into the Portuguese language. PelĂ© means THE BEST’.”
