Blunders Made by the Selectors:- Being a part of the selection committee is certainly not an easy job in hand and it takes a lot of thoughts, calculation, and decision making to ascertain the right combination for any team for a particular tournament and championship. Moreover, when it comes to the game of cricket, the job comes with its own risks and rewards and there are times when the selectors have been heavily criticized for their decision made in the interest of the team.
The world cup is here and every team has announced their preliminary squad for the upcoming mega event. Still, there have been few “most talked about names” which have been largely ignored by the selectors of the respective teams and we hereby provide you that list in our segment of team wise blunders made by the selectors for the world cup 2019.
- Rishabh Pant (India)
A lot has been stated and talked about this most talented young Indian wicketkeeper-batsman in recent times and he can surely be put into the list of the best players for the future of Indian cricket. Still, his exclusion from the Indian world cup squad came as a shocker to every cricket fans around and the selectors are heavily been criticized for the same act in the process.
From hitting those big sixes till playing those patient innings, Rishabh has done it all in his short International career and his maiden century in England on Test debut proved his prowess in the same direction. Still, his exclusion from the Indian team cannot be justified as he holds the capability to win a match on his own for the team on any given day.
- Alex Hales ( England)
Blunders Made by the Selectors:- Although it’s been explained in an unofficial statement by the ECA chief Ashley Giles that Alex Hales has been axed from the world cup squad for his in disciplinary issues, his absence might cost big time for the English team in the upcoming world cup. Alex Hales has been phenomenal at the top order in the recent times and he was one of the standout performers for the team on their West Indies tour.
Even when the selectors have excluded him for his drug addiction and noncompliance of team’s advisory, he should have got a chance to prove himself and his absence will leave a big void in the top order of the English batting line up.
- Asghar Afghan (Afghanistan)
Asghar afghan has just been relieved from his captaincy services for the upcoming world cup and he is been replaced by Gulbadin Naib as a captain for the team in the coveted tournament. This has drawn big-time criticism from most of the cricket experts and even fellow Afghani cricketers as he was the one who has taken the Afghanistan cricket to greater heights in the recent past. The team has won 31 ODIs under him and he has also made them won 37 of their 46 T20Is recently.
Players like Rashid Khan and Mohammed Nabi who have been the stalwarts of the Afghanistan cricket recently have bashed the selectors for this blunder and stated that this will give a big blow to the overall morale of the team in the upcoming world cup.
4. Mohammed Amir ( Pakistan)
There was a time when Amir was been counted as the most talented young bowlers in the International cricket but after his indulgence in the match-fixing saga, he was out from the International cricket for around 5 years in the process. Still, he has made a phenomenal comeback and brought out some of the best bowling performances in the champion’s trophy 2017 for his team.
Still, this player has been excluded from the preliminary world cup squad for Pakistan simply because of his lean run in the International cricket with the ball. Whilst that’s an understood thing, we also know that Amir is a big player for big matches and leaving him out for a crucial tournament like world cup doesn’t really make any sense.
- Reeza Hendricks ( South Africa)
If there’s one player in the South African team who has shown great promising skills with the bat on a consistent basis, it’s been, Reeza Hendricks., Reeza was simply phenomenal with bat in the recent times but he has still been dropped from the world cup squad because of the priority given to more experienced Hashim Amla.
Amla might be the most experienced amongst the two but Reeza holds the prowess of scoring at a rapid rate and his skills can come handy at English conditions for the Proteans. So we can say that it was quite silly for the selectors to not pick him up for the upcoming mega event.
- Peter Handscomb ( Australia)
Blunders Made by the Selectors:- Peter honeycomb might be scratching his head right now whilst thinking ‘what more I could’ve done for a world cup spot?”. He has been one of the brightest spots in the Aussie team in recent times and his performance with bat against India and Pakistan on recent tours is quite impressive. Still, his exclusion from the team just to accommodate the likes of Smith and Warner is not justifiable in any regards.
- Dinesh Chandimal ( Sri Lanka )
Even though Chandimal has been in and out from the team in recent times, he has been a great servant to the Srilankan cricket and his phenomenal record simply proves that fact. Still the Lankan selectors have sacrificed him on the name of bringing the ‘Youth power” and this can really cost the Lankan team big time in the world cup 2019. Although they have won the remarkable test series against the South African team recently with the same young squad, ODI is a whole different subject altogether and Chandimal could’ve proved a crucial player for them.
- Tim Seifert (New Zealand)
Everyone must have remembered the superb knocks played by Tim in the recently concluded T20 series against India and that was the reason, he was all sure to make a spot into the world cup 2019 squad for the kiwis. Still, we can only call it a “ Brain fade ‘ moment for the selectors that they preferred Tom Blundell in his place. Whilst Tom is also a good player, Tim could’ve fitted better into the top order of the Kiwi squad as a backup opener.
9. Sunil Narine ( West Indies)
Blunders Made by the Selectors:- There is no doubt about the fact that Sunil Narine is a seasoned campaigner for the west indies cricket since long and his exclusion from the world cup squad means that the West Indian spin attack will turn toothless. He has been amongst the wickets recently and even whilst he got under dispute with the cricket board over contract issues, he should’ve been playing for the interest of the West Indies cricket.
Not only he can bowl those mystery spin deliveries, but he can also come handy with the bat up the order for the team at any given day. Moreover, his current form in the IPL makes him a must-have for the world cup but that’s where the decision made by West Indies selectors can be quoted as “disappointing”.
10. Taskin Ahmed (Bangladesh)
Blunders Made by the Selectors:- Taskin has been amongst the wickets in the recently concluded Bangladesh Premier League and it has been ascertained that he will be making a comeback into the world cup squad after a while. Still, his performance has been largely ignored by the selectors and he has been kept at bay by them in the process. Taskin is a right arm fast bowler and he can consistently hit those right lengths at a speed of more than 140, something which is required in the English conditions during the world cup. Still, his exclusion leaves a big question mark on the decision making of the selectors in the same direction.
