The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has refuted claims that they approached former Australian cricketers Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer for the position of head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team. BCCI secretary Jay Shah has denied any report that the board has approached any former Australian cricketer with a coaching offer.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah released a statement emphasizing that the board prioritizes candidates with a deep understanding of the Indian cricket structure. He highlighted the importance of experience within the domestic system for nurturing talent and propelling Indian cricket forward. The ideal candidate, according to the BCCI, should possess an “in-depth knowledge of our domestic cricket framework.”

The role demands a high level of professionalism as one gets to nurture some of the best cricketers in the world and an assembly line of talented cricketers to follow. Catering to the aspirations of a billion fans is a huge honour and the BCCI will pick the right candidate, capable of propelling Indian cricket forward.”
“Neither I nor the BCCI have approached any former Australian cricketer with a coaching offer. The reports circulating in certain media sections are completely incorrect. Finding the right coach for our national team is a meticulous and thorough process. We are focused on identifying individuals who possess a deep understanding of the Indian cricket structure and have risen through the ranks. It’s crucial that our coach has an in-depth knowledge of our domestic cricket framework to truly elevate Team India to the next level,” he added.
Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer Publicly Decline Interest
Prior to the BCCI’s statement, both Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer had publicly expressed their reasons for not pursuing the Indian head coach role. Ponting stated that the demanding schedule and its impact on his personal life did not align with his current lifestyle priorities. Additionally, he wouldn’t be able to maintain his involvement with IPL teams while coaching the national team.
Langer, the former coach of the Australian team, acknowledged the immense pressure associated with coaching India and the toll it takes compared to managing an IPL franchise. He received advice from KL Rahul, captain of the Lucknow Super Giants, who emphasized the significant increase in pressure and complexities involved.
With the BCCI denying any contact with Ponting and Langer, the search for the next Indian head coach is still ongoing. The application deadline remains May 27th, and the BCCI emphasizes a thorough selection process to identify the most suitable candidate.
