Barcelona terminates sporting director Eric Abidal's contract

Barcelona FC has announced the departure of the club’s sporting director Eric Abidal after terminating his contract on Tuesday. Eric’s contract termination comes moments after the club sacked the manager Quique Seiten following a terrible defeat against Bayern Munich.

Abidal is a former Barcelona defender and also won the Champions League twice in his career with the La Liga club. After his retirement, he joined the club’s Board as the sporting director.

“The FC Barcelona and Eric Abidal have reached an agreement for the termination of the contract binding both parties. The Club publicly expresses its gratitude to Éric Abidal for the professionalism, commitment, dedication and positive and close treatment that he has always shown towards all the estates that make up the Barça family, and wishes him luck and success in the future.” the club said in the statement.

The club has been planning on the restructuring of the first-team ever since their humiliating loss to Bayern by 8-2 in the Champions League.

Barcelona bosses were quick in finding the next head coach of the club as they approached the Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman as Setien’s replacement.

Barcelona appointed Setien as the head coach back in January this year and during his tenure, the club registered 16 victories, four draws and five defeats.
