Angelo Mathews, Kusal Mendis score big as domestic cricket resumes in Sri Lanka

Cricket fans from all over the world have been missing the entertainment and were excitedly waiting for things to get normal so that they can see their favourite players play again. And cricket has finally started in the island nation of Sri Lanka.

Since the domestic cricket resumed in Sri Lanka, the clubs have started competing against each other. In one such match, Kusal Mendis scored an unbeaten 132 for Colombo Cricket Club while Angelo Matthews smashed an unbeaten 82 runs for Colts Cricket Club.

Sri Lanka’s Domestic cricket was slated for the month of July, but it got postponed because of the worldwide coronavirus pandemic. However, until now Sri Lanka has handled the COVID situation very carefully and smartly as the total number of affected people is even less than 300.

However, the limited-overs match series which was slated to be played between Indian and Sri Lanka was postponed indefinitely. Even the test series between Sri Lanka & Bangladesh which was supposed to take place in July has now been postponed to October. Although no confirmation has been released on the dates and venues. Instead of these international tournaments, SLC now hopes to play the Lankan Premier League (LPL) T20 franchise tournament.

The 25-year-old Kusal Mendis has played 76 ODI’s and scored 2167 runs with an average of 30.52 and Angelo Mathews played 217 ODI’s and scored 5830 runs with an average of 41.94 in his 12 years of career.

Usually, this kind of fireworks is not seen in Sri Lanka’s Domestic Cricket. Because most of the national team players are usually busy with the international commitments and seldom played in the domestic circuit. But many things have changed post the pandemic and looks like the players are taking up the domestic cricket to stage a comeback in the International circuit.
