The Indian Premier League wouldn’t be the IPL without incredible batsmen smashing boundaries and winning hearts. Every year, the batsman with the most runs throughout the season gets a special reward – the bright orange cap called the ‘Orange Cap’. Let’s take a look down memory lane and see who has taken home this prestigious prize.
The deadly openers like Chris Gayle, David Warner, and Sachin Tendulkar have won the Orange Cap in the past. In the recently concluded Indian Premier League, the rising star, Shubman Gill was awarded the Orange Cap after he successfully avoided the competition from the likes of Faf du Plessis and Devon Conway who reached the finale of the tournament.

In the past, the likes of Shaun Marsh, Robin Uthappa, Virat Kohli, and Kane Williamson were awarded the Orange Cap. Kane Williamson won the Orange Cap in 2018 when he led the team to the knockout stages in the absence of David Warner. In 17 games, the New Zealand international had scored 735 runs in the tournament.
Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper, Virat Kohli reached new heights in IPL 09 when he scored 950+ runs in the tournament. Kohli along with AB de Villiers took RCB to the finals but failed to lift the trophy in M Chinnaswamy Stadium. He also played as an opener before getting awarded the trophy.
Moving ahead to the 14th edition of the league, it remains interesting to see who will win the Orange Cap. As the likes of AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle reaching the fag end of the career, they would like to finish their career on the high whereas KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal will look to leave a big impression behind them when the league concludes. The Orange Cap 2021 is up for grabs at the moment.
The IPL isn’t just about a few players. Many other batsmen have fought hard for the Orange Cap. Australian batsman Michael Hussey, playing for the Chennai Super Kings in 2013, proved his experience by scoring 733 runs in 17 matches.
David Warner, the Australian opener, displayed his aggressive batting style, winning the Orange Cap three times – 2015 (Delhi Daredevils), 2017 (Sunrisers Hyderabad), and 2019 (Sunrisers Hyderabad). He was a nightmare for bowlers at the start of the innings.
New Zealand’s superstar Kane Williamson surprised everyone in 2018. Playing for the Sunrisers Hyderabad, he scored a classy 735 runs in 17 matches and even led his team to win the IPL trophy that year.
Lately, young Indian talents have been showcasing their power alongside international stars. KL Rahul (Kings XI Punjab in 2020) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (Chennai Super Kings in 2021) have secured the Orange Cap, proving that Indian batting is getting stronger.
But the record for most runs in a season belongs to Shubman Gill, the young Indian opener who played for the Gujarat Titans in 2023. He smashed an incredible 890 runs in just 17 matches, leaving everyone speechless with his powerful strokes.
