Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the FIFA U-17 Women’s Football World Cup 2020 on Sunday confirmed Ahmedabad as a temporary venue to host the tournament. Addressing the media personnel at the TransStadia, Roma Khanna, LOC tournament director said, “We are happy to to give a provisional clearance to Ahmedabad. She added that the Government of Gujarat has given full commitment to make the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup India 2020 a big success in the state.
Roma also praised the Transstadia as she said that the stadium is one of the best-performing sports grounds in the country at the moment. She further congratulated the government and stadium officials for being part one of the most important tournaments in the history of Indian football.
Gujarat Sports Minister Ishwar Singh Patel who was also present at the Transstadia said, “It will be a great honor for Gujarat to host the first women’s FIFA tournament for women in the country.” He further emphasized that the government is fully committed to fulfill their responsibility to make this tournament a success.
It is to be noted that an eight member FIFA delegation led by Oliver Vogt had visiting India FIFA U-17 Women’s Football World Cup 2020 from November 26 to December 1 for an official FIFA inspection to evaluate the progress and preparations for the India 2020. The delegation had inspected stadium and training sites in Kolkata, Guwahati, Mumbai and Ahmadabad. The FIFA delegation had expressed satisfaction at the progress made in Ahmadabad when they inspected the facility on November 30.
The LOC may have confirmed temporarily confirmed Ahmadabad as the venue for the mega global event but as per the Oliver Vogt, project lead of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup India 2020, an official delegation will be visiting all the stadiums once more just before the tournament kicks off.
The tournament will be held next year between November 2 and 21.
